The song is about a group of friends and two of them become lovers. And all the friends are wondering who this new girl is and why is he getting all fixed up for her. And the narrator (presumably a woman) is listening to all these rumors going around. But at the end, she settles them with the line "Chuck E.'s in love with the little girl singing this song." So she is the new girl everyone is wondering about. |

I think he completely made her up. "I told myself it was all something in her, but as we drove I knew it was something in me" makes me think that he is slowly starting to realize his capabilities as a criminal, etc. And the crash at the end is obviously the reality check, and "it was just a dream" is pretty ambiguous. What was a dream? Her? The robbery? The crash? All of it? I think however that the end is his death. It is a beautiful song nonetheless and one of my favorites from Tom Joad. Perhaps this is part of the reference to the Grapes of Wrath? |

I'm surprised no one has commented on this song. It's quite overlooked, especially on an overlooked album like Tunnel of Love. But regardless, I think its a great song about a bad relationship. He's obviously very attached to this woman and she haunts him in his sleep. But at the same time, there's this sad undertone to the entire thing. And what exactly is a lonely valentine? Sounds to me like he loves her more than she loves him. |

I always thought this song was about marriage. Basically he's proposing that even though their lives are crazy, they need to talk about where the future takes them. And he's definitely pro-marriage. It could also be talking about having a child, but regardless its some life changing situation, which also makes the song incredibly applicable to almost any situation. |

At the end of Dante's Divine Comedy, specifically Paradiso, there is a moment where Dante is experiencing Heaven and it just kind of this warmth, this light, and people just stand all day basking in the light of God. It's an interesting literary tie in to think about. |
