| Alanis Morissette – Mary Jane Lyrics | 19 years ago |

“come on people the term mary jane has been used for drugs for like decades.” True, but Mary Jane has been used as a NAME for a person for like longer. All the people who believe this song is about drugs, just give a few more reason besides the title to how it could possibly be about drugs. The songs meaning is so straightforward that I’m surprised people instantly jump to the “it’s drugs” conclusion. The song is about a person, believe it or not, who is named Mary Jane. Mary Jane, whether she was fictional or real, is someone who does everything for everyone else, but never takes a step back and looks at what it’s doing to her. “What's the matter Mary Jane, you had a hard day As you place the don't disturb sign on the door What's the matter Mary Jane, you had a hard day As you place the don't disturb sign on the door You lost your place in line again, what a pity You never seem to want to dance anymore” Mary Jane comes home everyday with no satisfaction in her life, but goes through the same day, everyday, because she doesn’t want things to change. She’s starting to loose touch with all the things that made her happy because everything else is dragging her down, hence the line “you never seem to want to dance anymore.” “hear you're counting sheep again Mary Jane What's the point of trying' to dream anymore I hear you're losing weight again Mary Jane Do you ever wonder who you're losing it for” From what I understand, Alanis had problems with depression and eating disorders. The first line applies to that mentality where nothing seems to matter and there’s no point in anything. The second line is about how someone goes through a lot just to look pretty in the mirror, but in the end, is someone loosing a bunch of weight and trying to look better to please their self esteem or to please someone else. In my opinion, it’s a very clever way of summing up how pointless body image problems are. You’re not going to be happy unless you can accept yourself as you are. So take this moment Mary Jane and be selfish Worry not about the cars that go by All that matters Mary Jane is your freedom Keep warm my dear, keep dry. Alanis ends the song by telling Mary Jane to be selfish once in a while, to participate in a little self-indulgence and not worry about what might be passing her by because worrying is just wasteful. Regret is part of life and there is no reason in letting all the things that you passed up get you down. All that matters is that Mary Jane is happy with herself, and I love the line “Keep warm my dear, keep dry”. It’s a odd way to phrase a simple “happier days” thought. That’s my synopsis of the song. I could be wrong about some minor details, but I am positive this song is NOT about drugs. |

| Everclear – Santa Monica Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I don’t think this song is just about depression, drugs, or some break-up. I think it’s feeling fed up and just wanting to leave everything that is dragging you down behind and start somewhere new. Just pack all your shit up, and leave for somewhere where you can find peace, maybe for Art that was Santa Monica. I could be wrong about the songs origin, but that’s always what I hear. I remember I was, I think 11, when this song came out. My mom missed the memo on parental advisory labels and I got Sparkle and Fade, along with World of Noise, right after I saw the video for Santa Monica on MTV. I can’t remember how many times I listened to that album, probably more than any 11 year old should. This song is so easy to play and sing, but it’s so complex when you listen to it. It starts off slow and bluesy, then Art says “I am still dreaming of your..” and it kicks into a hard and heavy rock sound. Art somehow manages to capture a peaceful oceanside-scenery feel with these lyrics while being backed up by a hard rock grunge sound. It’s such a descriptive and expressive song, that it becomes one of those songs that has it’s own meaning depending on the listener, and I think those are the best kind of songs. For me, this is the most underrated song I ever heard. I talk to people today, and barely anyone remembers this song. You see these lists by magazines and TV specials that say the “Top 100 Songs of all Time” or something, and I never have seen this song on those lists. I never have seen Everclear on any special list, but as far as I’m concerned they were one of the best bands that came out of the 90’s. |

| Johnny Cash – Hurt (Nine Inch Nails cover) Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I don’t know, I get more annoyed when younger kids talk about rock n roll, but don’t pay enough respect to the legends that created it all. I’d rather them listen to Johnny Cash then pass his great music by. Anyways, I suppose the song is just Johnny as an older and wiser man looking back in his life, reminiscing about all the good times and the mistakes. I don’t get why so many people can get over the fact that this is a cover song. So what? Who gives a shit? It’s still a kick ass tune. | |
| Hole – Celebrity Skin Lyrics | 19 years ago |

Come on you Kurt Cobain nazis, its Courtney Love. The woman can barely walk 5 steps without stumbling, what makes anyone think she could get away with murder? Anyways, this is probably one of the only Hole songs that I really like. I don’t care for a lot of their material, but they do have a handful of really good songs. I love the sarcasm in this song. |
