KT Tunstall – Other Side Of The World Lyrics 14 years ago
The song's definitely about an LDR. I remember once reading somewhere that she wrote this song about two friends of hers who were a couple, and she wrote this as she saw their relationship deteriorate and end because of the distance.

I, however, find it really personal. Like only someone who'd been in that situation could write something like this. It's too accurate.. I think the first verse is already talking about an LDR that's deteriorating. She's waiting for something to change the cold that she already feels inside, cold that's there because of something that's off in the relationship, something too tough to accept.

"Muscles tighten in her face"...an LDR can take a toll on you. On your mood. Everything seems like a struggle. You feel angry, anxious "Buries her soul in one embrace", remembering those embraces, remembering when you were WITH that person feels like your soul's dying. You're frustrated and angry with the situation, but the second you allow yourself to miss the person, you feel devastated.

The days are full of excuses...I feel like she's writing from the perspective of the one who was trying real hard to hold on to the relationship, while the other person is the one who doesn't want to accept that his feelings have already changed. So he just didn't feel like looking for her, writing to her, calling her. When confronted about it, he'd make up an excuse, because he's trying not to admit (even to himself) how he feels.

It's a painful situation...she just wants it to be over, "can you let me go?" But there's hope, too. Because, aren't they soulmates? So, one last plead: "can you still love me when you can't see me anymore?"

But the truth is there, and there's nothing left to be done. "The time has come to move along". "You're on the other side of the world"..

Absolutely beautiful song. Really special to me. Once heard Gary say in an interview that it was the purest love song he had ever written. Amazing tune, amazing lyrics. Just brilliant.

Shakira – Don't Bother Lyrics 18 years ago
Sorry - in my last comment I didnt mean 'leave for the other girl,' but rather NOT leave the other girl (fiancee) for her.

lizzieluvs2play, there's no reason why 'the other woman' had to be a 'whore' and a 'boyfriend stealer'. I know that's the stereotype, but sometimes 'the other woman's deeply in love with the guy and is hardly a whore (check out Dave Matthews' lyrics for 'The Space Between' or 'Say Goodbye', cos you can see what Im talking about there). I think that's the sort of girl portrayed here cos she's so hurt that he'd leave her for that other girl. Love the line "the ring you gave to her will lose its shine" - MAY be a BIT bitchy, but carries quite a lot of emotions. This song's just great stuff.

Been listening A LOT to this song and "Say Goodbye" over the past couple of months and noticed something - anyone else reckon these two songs are about the same girl?

Five for Fighting – I Just Love You Lyrics 19 years ago
Love this song - thought I'd find a typical (yet lovely, cos Ondrasik's just a genius...!) love song, but when that "I'll never stop being amazed how my 4-year-old girl knows exactly what to say" bit came on, I was blown away! I remember how I saw my dad when I was that age...and things eventually change so, so much...I don't know - but anyway, this song simply gets to me. Absolutely beautiful.

Dave Matthews Band – Say Goodbye (Album version) Lyrics 19 years ago
I see this as a sort of one-night thing BUT not a one-night-stand because these two actually care about each other, so it wouldn't be as 'shallow' as that. However, she is in a relationship ("but tomorrow go back to your man"), so it can't go any further than that one night. I feel it's about two friends, who might be better together, but don't get together for some reason...she just stays with 'her man,' and the whole romance that could be born out of that one night is simply overlooked because they HAVE to "go back to being friends." It's a sad song, actually...but the rythm makes it so upbeat that even with those lyrics, it just cheers me up!

My personal interpretation of the song if very simple, and I think it goes along with what some people here have said: a sort of forbidden love. I think this is about a guy and a girl who may have had a romantic moment, but that shouldn’t have happened for some reason (eg. one of them was committed or something)…but I think the romantic moment between these two was real, as if there were really important feelings between the two of them, which is why the guy (assuming this is the “guy,” as Dave’s singing) says “you cannot quit me so quickly.”

“The space between the tears we cry is the laughter that keeps us coming back for more” – they suffer, but when they talk, they laugh, they have a great time, and that makes them want to be with each other in that romantic way more and more. But they have to lie about their true feelings because there’s still that obstacle – therefore: “the wicked lies we tell and hope to keep safe from the pain.” But then he wonders “will I hold you again?” and talks about the “fickle, fuddled words” confusing him, showing how they decided to leave that moment behind, and lie to themselves about those feelings by having everyday normal conversations where the “Like ‘Will it rain today?’” comes in.

Finally, the line “the space between what’s wrong and right is where you’ll find me waiting for you” pretty much sums up what I think of this song: it’s that small space of confusion between what’s wrong (because that shouldn’t be happening between them) and what’s right (because they really have these strong, amazing feelings for each other) is where she’ll find him (or viceversa), because it’s in that small space of confusion where they will be able to be together – as that romantic moment that had happened before. That’s the way I see it, anyway :)

Barenaked Ladies – One Little Slip Lyrics 19 years ago
Cool song - to me it's very clear (might be biased, though...probably is!) - it's about someone who while being in a relationship either kissed or did something else with someone other than their partner. He probably knew this person, as a friend or summat, and then comes the "it was a fusion of confusion and a few confounding things" where it just shows how they screwed up! They got into the "big mess." Can also see that in "I'll never live till I live down the one MISTAKE that follows me around." Doesn't seem like an affair, though - just "ONE little slip." Yep - that's what I reckon it means!
