| Darkest Hour – A Distorted Utopia Lyrics | 14 years ago |
| he tells us what it's about: "entheogenic, the divine." entheogens are psychedelic plants and other botanicals. it's about the beautiful and terrifying and blissful and confusing encounter with the timeless divine that is a psychedelic mushroom trip. love this band so much. | |
| Cloud Cult – I'm Feeling So Fuckin' Fine Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I'm talking to macedawg, in case anybody didn't already get that. I mean, seriously? | |
| Cloud Cult – I'm Feeling So Fuckin' Fine Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| I'm sorry, I don't normally do this, and I hate when I have to be a dick to someone, but: are you fuckin retarded? I don't think I need to say more. | |
| Mirah – The Light Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| I think it's about someone who is very depressed and who talks about killing themselves frequently, yet they've never even attempted to go through with it. they are constantly complaining about life and how terrible things are, when the truth is the problem is inside them. they have so much going for them and appreciate none of it. if they would just face their problems and change their thinking, they could conquer the sadness and live peacefully, but it's their choice to make, and no one can help until they've made it. but I think the end shows that they never made that choice, and instead finally drowned themselves. | |
| Yoav – Where Is My Mind Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
Very definitely the lyrics are: "With your feet in the air and your head on the ground With your feet in the air and your head on the ground Try this trick and spin it, yeah Your head will collapse But there's nothing in it And you'll ask yourself Where is my mind [3x] Way out in the water See it swimmin' I was swimmin' in the Caribbean Animals were hiding behind the rocks Except the little fish But they told me, he swears Tryin' to talk to me, coy koi. Where is my mind [3x] Way out in the water See it swimmin' ? With your feet in the air and your head on the ground Try this trick and spin it, yeah Your head will collapse If there's nothing in it And you'll ask yourself Where is my mind [3x] Oh With your feet in the air and your head on the ground Oh Try this trick and spin it, yeah Oh Oh |

| Bright Eyes – Touch Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| to me, this song is about a love destroyed by the narrator's own depression. he knows he wants this, but he just feels so sad and detached that he can't really make it work. he can't seem to trust his lover, and he's not really sure how to feel love. he can see what's happening, but he doesn't know how to fix it, he just has to watch and remember the good moments as he fails to love her yet again, and the people who once cared about him all turn and walk away. | |
| Ingrid Michaelson – The Hat Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| this is exactly how I feel about my first real boyfriend. He was great, and he was my first love, and I'm not sure why it ended, but it's alright. I don't miss him, but I'll never forget him, either. | |
| Fionn Regan – The Cowshed Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| what a simple, beautiful, sad song. to me, it's clearly about a childhood friend or younger sibling who hung themselves in a barn. | |
| Seabear – Midori Green Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| that first line is "Sleep came to carry me into the valley." these lyrics mostly don't make sense to me. | |
| Seabear – Hands Remember Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| two lovers, who've had a falling out. and the narrator is waiting for the fight to blow over so they can see each other again. I get the impression this is not an entirely uncommon occurrence, that maybe they've gotten in fights like this before, and they separate for a while, but always come back because underneath it all they're so perfect for each other it's like they already lived a whole life as a couple, and have already died of old age sitting in rocking chairs together. they're like ships in a bottle, they can never get very far away from each other. | |
| The Fire Theft – Sinatra Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I think he's saying it's time for him to settle down, stop touring so much, and become a "real person" again, instead of some kind of rock star persona. he's saying he's not whatever anybody thinks or says he is, he's just himself. just another human, free to think and do and be whoever he pleases. | |
| Seabear – Owl Waltz Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
thanks so much for the lyrics, but I have a few corrections. I'm still not sure about two spots, but everything else I can hear very clearly. this is what I hear: It's hard to wake up when you're not sleeping It's hard to make it mean something when it means nothing at all Hear her call, in vain I slept for a year Until I pulled your hair I fell down the stairs So glad, I found you there Time to forget your mistakes and regrets Sometimes I swore your mouth was a trap door And on long black nights When my hope had died You were a friendly knife So I let the werewolf out I let the ?lonely nights? Have their way I looked down on you From my mountain I slept by your feet And when you come out You're somewhere downtown Drowned in sound And no sleep, no light No appetite, ?twister sore? On the frozen ground It's all over now So many thoughts To dream about Some nights I swear there was magic in the air |

| Sparklehorse – Return To Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| it sounds to me like someone very dear to him has died. | |
| Sparklehorse – Shade and Honey Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| it sounds to me like he's singing about someone who he cares about, but I don't get the impression he's in love. it's more like a close friend who's depressed, and he knows he's just got to distance himself and let her hit bottom so that she can climb back out again, but it still hurts to watch her go through it. I could be biased somewhat by current events in my life, though. | |

| Sparklehorse – Don't Take My Sunshine Away Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| this song has such a Beatles-y feel to it, but it's still as unique as the rest of Sparklehorse's stuff. I love when the distortion kicks in and the beat slows. this band is fuckin brilliant. he's just in love, and describing the one he loves to the best of his ability. :] | |
| Goldfrapp – Black Cherry Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| it's about the downside of love. black cherries are sweet and delicious, but even the sweetest cherries have stones(pits). whenever I eat a reeeally especially good cherry, I'll suck on the stone until every last bit of fruit is gone, and I think that's what she's doing here. she's savouring every bit of what she had, because it was so good while it lasted. but now comes the hard part: the end. | |
| Goldfrapp – Crystalline Green Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| it's about smoking on the beach! for me, this song is absolutely about wasting a whole day stoned out of your head just bumming around the beach. | |
| Goldfrapp – Number 1 Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| in my opinion, Alisson is absolutely the queen of double (or sometimes triple) entendres. her music so often evokes an incredible sense of love and emotion, as well as clearly depicting EROTIC SCREAMING LUST!!! haha, I'm willing to bet this song was written about both her favourite position, and her favourite partner. | |
| Goldfrapp – Koko Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| this is definitely about drugs for me. it's the takeoff, the set-up and then the dive. it's about how trips start out slow, and then you just fall into it. at first the world just gets slow and smooth, like caramel. and then soon, you're just gone into your own mind, you're no longer of this world. | |
| Goldfrapp – Koko Lyrics | 18 years ago |

| Goldfrapp – Fly Me Away Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| psychedelics!! I swear, this album is just going down the list, a song for each drug. this is acid all the way. time is meaningless when I'm tripping, and everything is beautiful. | |
| Goldfrapp – Let It Take You Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| this song, for me, is yet another amazing drug song from Goldfrapp. it's about heavy downers like xanax, methadone, or even heroin. if you've ever been barred out, you'd understand completely. it's like a waking dream, and you can't fight it, it just drowns you like the ocean. the only way to enjoy it is to let it take you, lead you. just feel it, and life gets so much easier. | |
| Goldfrapp – Ride A White Horse Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| cocaaaaaaine!! but it's a bit of triple entendre, I think. a reference to drugs, by all means, but also a symbolic reference to freedom, as has been officially stated. I also think this is likely a reference to Bianca Jaggers, and the whole glam lifestyle. she should be proud, a triple entendre is a rare occurrence in language. regardless, it's a fuckin sick song to be coked and partying to!! | |
| Sparklehorse – Eyepennies Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| to me, the song is the figurative death of an aspect or a particular persona of the narrator. he's burying who he was, knowing one day he'll look back and examine the remains of who he used to be. he is achieving this death by tearing himself apart, burning his exterior to find who lies beneath, what is at the core of who he is. I think the bloodsuckers are other people and powers in his life, maybe even his own friends, so close to him and hiding their true intentions right in front of him. the cat represents his own depression, a sort of emotional weight that settles on his heart and makes it hard to live. he's trying to kill that version of himself, with it's many problems and so much sadness, to hopefully emerge as a happier man. | |
| Radiohead – Morning Bell Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| to me this song is all about consumerism, and how people tend to sort of blend in and do all the same things as the rest of society, even if they don't really want to. "light another candle," meaning mourn whatever the media says to mourn. then everybody still celebrating christmas, even if they're not in anyway religious, because it's become a consumer holiday. everybody worried about the same material stuff, shopping, clothes, furniture, cars. cut the kids in half is a reference to making more identical consumer clones, because they're identical to their predecessor, so it's like they've just been split in two and then regrown into two identical beings. the last verse (the mumbled bits from the live shows) is talking about how everybody's functioning, but nobody's thinking about what they're doing. also about how everyone wants to blend in, but nobody wants to feel like they're just clones or slaves to the media. everybody wants to...nobody wants to be a slave. | |
| Radiohead – Exit Music (For a Film) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I too think this song was written about R+J, but whenever I hear it, I think of an abusive father, and the mother taking her child and leaving in the night. kind of like Azure Ray's "We Are Mice," but without the stabbing. | |
| Devotchka – How It Ends Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| to me, this song is all about faith in the bible, specifically, about someone who knows they are dying, and is now questioning their beliefs or lack thereof. they always wanted to believe in heaven, and finally, when they die, they can. they knew the ending all along, and just couldn't believe it until they were already dead. that's my take. | |
| Dntel – Umbrella Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| to me, this song is about depression. the person he's speaking to is depressed and moves to a big city to try and fix the problem, but you can turn a city upside down, and if the problem is inside you, you'll still be depressed. you can from your problems, you can get in the car and try to find comfort on the road, but all there is is cold cement, and your problems are still right there with you. my sister found that out for herself, and then when I was depressed later on, she told me to be careful not to run, because my problems would be right there with me. | |
| Lali Puna – Contratempo Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| translation, anyone? pretty please? | |
| Lali Puna – Middle curse Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I think the middle curse is the life of the middle class, working in some crap 9 to 5, not really enjoying what they're doing, not really getting much in return, just existing as society expects them to. | |
| Silverchair – Straight Lines Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I don't like this new album at all. it's pop-rock, a genre which simply doesn't agree with me. repetitive lyrics, even more repetitive melody, that 4/4 throb of beat and chord, no movement, no dissonance, nothing to keep my interest. but it's not surprising it's a commercial success. there's nothing there to be disagreeable or unusual or interesting; it's highly "listenable." I do think the album shows a newfound comfort amongst the band members, but they're comfortable with music I just can't seem to get into. ah well, my favourite post-rock is still going strong. | |
| Electric President – Farewell Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| it sounds to me like he's describing a world that has been ripped apart by war and massive climate change, and now the ice age is beginning. he's from Florida, and so it's not hard to imagine maybe his children or grandchildren standing on some bridge that was built between the surviving bits of land, their old home now under the sea. the ice age is coming, the world is turning into a frozen hell, and so they leave the city to go wandering and maybe try to survive, or maybe just to go die. leaving the city to die seems to be a recurring theme on this album. the ending to me seems to further suggest this. they don't want to die knowing what happened, so they tell themselves it was just a dream, not really happening. it's a beautiful song no matter how you interpret the lyrics, but that's the story the tell to me. | |
| Electric President – Some Crap About the Future Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| one of my favourite electric president songs, though I could never pick a single favourite, I like them all too much. this song sounds like a view of the future, the story of a couple dysfunctional attempts to put humans into mechanical bodies. it results in the people feeling broken, dead, and detached. one lays in the sun, and the warmth makes her feel almost alive again, but it's only temporary, and there's nothing left for them in the city, maybe because the majority of people don't mind the cold, or maybe because the failed attempts are hidden and suppressed to avoid scandal. people are so heartless. the two make a plan to leave and go to the country to lay down and die in the sun and the dirt and the leaves. maybe they'll feel closer to organic again. | |
| Animal Collective – Banshee Beat Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| for me, the meaning of this song has absolutely nothing to do with the lyrics. :] | |
| mewithoutYou – I Never Said That I Was Brave Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| to me, this song is about getting into a relationship with someone you don't really care about, just for sex, to waste some time, but they're in it for the long haul. then when they find out how you feel, they're obviously hurt and they leave. but of course, as soon as they're gone from your life you miss them, or at least you miss the company, and you start to want them back again, so you try to ask for another chance, for forgiveness, and they give it to you. but then when you wake up in the morning, it's the same as it was, you don't really have feelings for them, and you've been there before, you know what you've done, and the relationship just sort of cycles through. you miss them when they're gone but you can't stand them when they're around, and even though you know they're not right for you, you keep going back because you miss the comfort of having someone beside you. I might be the only person who gets that from these lyrics, but regardless it's one of my favourite mewithoutYou songs. | |
| Bright Eyes – Neely O'Hara Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| to me, this has nothing to do with neely jenkins or an eating disorder. it's about watching a friend succumbing to alcoholism. the throwing up is just throwing up from being hung over in the morning, I've been there, and there's definitely no way to even keep water down at that point. and to someone who's always drunk, the words they think they say and the words they actually speak are often two very different things. as for swallowing sleep, the person has gotten so bad that they can't go to sleep unless they drink themselves unconscious anymore. drug abuse changes people, it changed me and I didn't even realise it until I stopped popping pills and could track the differences in retrospect. intense song, beautiful as to be expected with conor's work. definitely one of my favourites. | |
| Franz Ferdinand – Michael Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| hey, I'm gay, and I don't feel threatened listening to blatantly heterosexual songs. if I like the music, then whatever. had a thing for a straight boy named Michael for a while. we tended to end up at the same shows, so I can totally see him two-stepping to this song. man, straight guys suck. (or more to the point, they don't.) | |
| Cursive – A Gentleman Caller Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| To me this song is a story about a cheating husband who comes home to his wife and lies to her face. She knows that he's sleeping around, and she is hurt and angry and wants to get back at him. Another man sees this, and tells her he would never lie to her, to get her to sleep with him. But then she wakes up the next day, and after a sobering night of sleep, she realizes she's stooped to her husband's level, as well as that she's been used and exploited by the man she slept with. So she goes home and confronts her husband, and he admits to the truth and after a big emotional discussion they fall back in love, and hold each other like weaklings, both destroyed by what they've done to each other. The man comforts her, and tells her he still loves her, and promises to do whatever it takes to make her trust him again. The worst is over, the fight is done, and they realize they still love one another. | |
| Hooverphonic – Vinegar & Salt Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I'm surprised no one has commented this song already, it is one of my personal favourites. To me this song is about someone who is in love with someone who doesn't share the same feelings. The love interest is honest, to the point of brutality, but the lover is desperate for his affections, even if they are false. (S)he would rather live in a lie than to be without him, even if they are so completely different, like vinegar and oil. I can really relate to this on a very personal level, having fallen for someone so completely different from me in almost every aspect, and completely out of my usual taste. And I still think it would be better if he were lying to me, if only for a little while, than to never experience him at all. | |

| Panic! at the Disco – I Write Sins Not Tragedies Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| On a side note, whether you like the band or not, let's please keep this civilised. This site is meant to be a discussion of what the song means to you, personally, for the sake of discovering other sides of the song, so as to better understand the song on a more personal level. Let's not reduce this place to a long chain of hateful ignorance, followed by an equally hateful and equally ignorant rebuttal. So someone says they think this band sucks. Ok. But ranting that they're stupid posers who like the Pussycat Dolls (as if that had any bearing whatsoever), or making some ridiculous comment about the person's age is absolutely no better, and certainly has no more place here than their poor opinion of the band. And please, stop telling people what to like. I happen to enjoy the Pussycat Dolls on occassion, despite being a long-standing fan of bands like Nirvana, NIN, etc. My taste has simply diversified as I've matured. | |
| Panic! at the Disco – I Write Sins Not Tragedies Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I can never quite decide if I like this band. At first, I hated their sound, it was way too pop-punk for my personal taste, but then I listened to the lyrics, as well as hearing a few of their song titles, and since I'd heard a lot of buzz about them among people I generally trusted I went ahead and bought the album. The reason I decided to do so was that the entire album, almost word for word, is taken directly from the writings of the amazing Chuck Palahniuk. This particular song is a series of almost direct quotes from his novel Invisible Monsters - an excellent read, by far one of my favourite books of all time. However, I am currently leaning towards hating them, because I was shocked to find that they gave the mighty Chuck absolutely no credit, and in many instances specifically made claims to having written the words themselves (or himself, as I understand from a few of the comments I've read). So I'm torn. I've begun to kind of enjoy their sound, especially this song, but they've ripped off Chuck to the point that someone should really be taking legal action. The books are copyrighted, after all. And if anyone hasn't read Fight Club, Invisible Monsters, or any of Palahniuk's other works I highly recommend you take a gander. He was truely life-changing for me. | |
