This is a great song...maybe not the best depth lyrically, but just a fun song.
My take: it's the rightfully selfish point of view someone takes after recovering from the inevitably traumatic ending of a relationship. There is no you (fuck you bitch/dick)...I'm the only one who matters cuz I gotta look out for number one.
The scab thing is the best...to me it's a clear metaphor. You see the scab there, know you should leave it alone and just keep picking at that little fucker anyway...and what happens? You just reinjure yourself and scar yourself. But it's so fucking tempting that you do it anyway...but at least you (kind of) learn from your fuck up. |

Haha, I have to agree. My favorite lines are these:

They work so hard and they try to be strong
I just think of how hilarious and ironic those statements are, at least coming out of David Byrne's mouth. For example, I think that there are a lot of people in this country that are happy go lucky, and simultaneously get their panties up in a bunch if people dare question whether or not the U.S. is the greatest country in the world, yet are content with everything that's going on. I also think in this whole thing he's kind of sending up how "great" we think industrialization and urbanization are, we ignore how mundane and separated from nature we are...but hey, at least we can see it from the highway so we know it's out there, even if we never bother to visit because after all, we have all these great buildings! |

How has nobody commented on this song yet? I just heard this song for the first time today...it's pretty awesome, takes me back to the late 90's/early 2000's...it's very brooding and simple, melancholy and melodic. I wish I would've heard this song earlier...it's like Elliott Smith with some muscle...but I didn't get to hear it until tonight because whenever I play Rock Band 2 it's with my brother so I only get to hear the songs with hard drums. Thank god I played alone tonight...this song is tits! |

what a great song. loved it from the moment I heard it. all the history looks right (I took a class on Southern Europe last semester and it sounds right). great song writing (though the spanish is sloppy)...
I think he says "yo te quiero infinito, yo te QUERA, oh mi corazon" which would mean "I love you infinity(infinitely), I will love you (forever), oh my heart." So it's saying the same thing a couple different ways. Cool song though. Spain is a tragic country with a violent history, and you feel so bad for all the lives they lost killing themselves...Ireland too.

this song is cool, it's so emotionally intense...it's such a conflicted song. It's like there's a yearning in her voice (pain) and the lyrics kind of reinforce that, but at the same time say "look, my lover may do some stupid crap that drives me insane...but I still love 'em."
(And the song right after (Frosti) is kind of like the reflecting period after sharing this emotion with someone? Maybe?) |

I kind of think this song is a happy song. "WE live on a mountain, right at the top" - her and her lover are on a mountain top, or island, or whatever, alone. It's just those two up there. And every morning she goes to the edge to see what it's like. What is it like letting yourself go and being by yourself? Will she crash into those rocks? She imagines she will. So perhaps she believes that staying safe with her love is a better than what she perceives as the alternative.
Or I could be wrong. |

Bjork knocks another one out of the park. Sometimes I kinda think the fact that she's Icelandic gives her an advantage as a poet...I mean, her language is more descriptive then a lot of the b.s. cliches beinig tossed around in music. Almost out of necessity it's more descriptive, so I guess that adds a dimension to the perspective interpretation.
Either way the bottom line is: Bjork's got mad skillz. |
