They Might Be Giants – Ana Ng Lyrics 19 years ago
Ana Ng is apparently the shortest female name you can find. Good song.

Syd Barrett – Dark Globe Lyrics 19 years ago
I like how he's the only one playing the song. When he sings "please lift a hand/I'm only a person" the voice you hear can be anyones almost. What a sharp observation. People are just people, and they feel like they need eachother. Rest in peace, Syd.

The Velvet Underground – New Age Lyrics 19 years ago
The live version is much more rewarding, conceptually speaking. The music is so organic and alive with energy. The ending is absolutely beautiful.

Radiohead – No Surprises Lyrics 19 years ago
I think it's about wanting to die. I think he's willing to take a chance with suicide, even though he's not sure what's on the other side, it must be better than the dreadful purgatory he must endure while living. In the background of one chorus you can hear something like "Get me outta here" floating around.

Radiohead – Karma Police Lyrics 19 years ago
Is this song about annoying people? The ending is beautiful, like he knows he is wrong to judge, but he can't prevent making the same mistakes in the future.

Radiohead – Fake Plastic Trees Lyrics 19 years ago
We are allowed to be fake I guess, if we become that way to make someone else feel real. He seems to have been the victim of the situation. Someone may have been fake for him, and he feels fucked over because of it. So he knows what he believes in is fake, he just needs some kind of evidence that love is a thing that hasn't become that way too.

Modest Mouse – Dramamine Lyrics 19 years ago
Well, I used to take Dramamine quite often. The first time I heard this song was my first trip on it. Taking Dramamine is like losing your mind. You feel lost, but awake, in a dream(or nightmare.) And yes, you totally feel like shit the next day. It's probably not worth it, but if you do take it, you gotta listen to this song.

Modest Mouse – 3rd Planet Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is so complex. Could it be coming from the point of view of a madman, or a genius? Each line of writing could have several meanings, maybe they were made like that deliberately...just to make the song more interesting and thought provoking. When Brock sings "your heart felt good" it almost makes my eyes well up with tears, it's just so similar to how I've felt before. I was just never able to express that feeling in such an efficient way.

Modest Mouse – Gravity Rides Everything Lyrics 19 years ago
This song combines everyday, universal imagery with compelling lyrics that are open for anyone's interpretation. Some of the imagery is darker "flesh it sags" and some of it is bittersweet "But at least I don't see you float away." Somehow the lyrics and the music together create a beautiful song, I guess because all the right things fell into place. Listen to how the music is weightless. The song seems as if it has been sparked by coincidence and after that it just kinda goes on forever, possibly like the images you remember most vividly from different moments of your life. One of the few songs that can bring a tear to my eye.

Pixies – Velouria Lyrics 19 years ago
The break in the song near the middle truely stands out to me as a moment of melodic clarity and compositional brilliance. Very Brian Wilson-esque. It makes my hair stand on end. I wish it could last longer.

Pixies – River Euphrates Lyrics 19 years ago
I love the sand storm of dissonant guitar ambience near the beginning. This song is perfect.

Pixies – Debaser Lyrics 19 years ago
Sometimes I tend to think of the Pixies as a Surrealist band. The imagery that they incorporate into their songs is so dark and demented. Their lyrics seem totally free-associative. Great song and a great movie.

The Velvet Underground – Stephanie Says Lyrics 19 years ago
I think the song is about someone on the brink of reality. The lyrics seem to have been written in a deliberately confusing and fractured style to give relevance to her apparent insanity. The song almost feels like a morbid radio jingle, catchy but somewhat repulsive and ironic. I love the shivering viola from Cale when Reed sings, "It's such an icy feeling." Perhaps this song would've sounded more conventional and compelling if a female had sung it, perhaps someone representing Stephanie herself.

The Velvet Underground – Femme Fatale Lyrics 19 years ago
It seems so psychological and dark but also fragile and beautiful at the same time. Nico lures you into the song, and you're trapped from then onwards. It seems like you enter someone's very delicate state of mind when you listen to this song, and you can't decide if it suits you or the troubled character in the song better. It plays tricks with my head, and I like it for some unexplainable reason. A perfect snapshot of a memory.

^That 's what I always thought, but I just never had a reason to express that idea to anybody.

The Jesus and Mary Chain – Just Like Honey Lyrics 19 years ago
That actually sounds plausible^ But the song is so beautiful I don't know if I can accept that theory. I like the extremely simple arrangement. It seems to be used in a poetic way. It reminds me a child-like helplessness, to understand more than you can express. My favorite part is at the break, where the guitar in the background sounds as if it's someones first chord ever on a guitar, again reflecting upon the idea of developing realizations and understanding. Such a pretty song.

Sonic Youth – Schizophrenia Lyrics 19 years ago
Yeah, the meaning is pretty clear for a Sonic Youth song, but what I think is more thought provoking than the lyrical content is the musical content. The music further expands on the idea of a split personality by being arranged in a jagged style. The song is divided up into roughly three major sections, a part for each of the characters in the song and the ending could be thought of as a resolution of sorts. Each section is conneced by brief, but electrifying transitions. This song is bubbling with life. It's one of my favorites because of its thematic merits and its flawless execution.

Pink Floyd – Astronomy Domine Lyrics 19 years ago
Syd Barrett and the early Pink Floyd were the forerunners of the underground progressive/psychedelic movement in Britain in the mid to late sixties. Maybe Syd wasn't aware of it, but he created a song that perfectly organized this idea with Astronomy Domine. Everything about this hallucinogenic composition reflects (perhaps unwittingly) the underground music scene at the time and the early Pink Floyd's important place in it. I think the lyrics were indeed penned with a certain concept in mind, maybe not one as compelling as my theory above, but I really don't believe that they were accidental...maybe it was a premeditated perfect mistake executed with what Waters calls "random precision." No one can say for sure.
