I definitely think this song is based on personal experience, most of Rufus' music is, but I also think the song can be uniquely personal to everyone who hears it. I think a lot of people experience this bittersweet sort of obsession with someone they know they can't have. It brings them joy and inexplicable sadness at the same time, and that's why the lyrics are sad but the song can be described as musically upbeat. |

i actually saw rufus (in an interview that i think was on the dvd that came with the want 2 cd) talking about this song. he was saying how everyone was going to think it was about his sister but how it was really directed towards female performers in general and how he recognizes their struggles and such and wants to sort of guide them in the right direction, and in that way he is like a big brother. as for the "mozart" references, i can definitely see how this sort has a touch of that era with the stringed instruments and the powdered wig thing. my interpretation of that is that he saying that he will guide her until she is at a self-sufficient level, i.e. that of mozart. i don't know about that though, i tend to have very naive and optimistic interpretations of songs. |
