The dogs represent chaos, anomy, existential threats to peace and happiness in life. Dad was initially seen as a protector, scaring away the existential threats to peace and harmony. Then his dog ran away. Then his sister died. Then his mother goes into deep grief. Then his dad, who was seen as the protector initially, loses his job. He is vulnerable too. Then he wishes to die too. He is cut off emotionally through all this because the losses are too great and happen all around the same time. His reaction only appears to be one of apathy; the losses are so great and threatening to his mental well-being that he wishes he could die. The song ends in nihilism and religious parody, where the forces of chaos are rewarded in heaven. |
