| Possibly my favorite of all his songs. Just the *way* he says it, makes me tear up almost every time, and I don't cry at any other song than this. | |

This is actually based of a really really old folk song called the Two Magicians, but... not exactly traditional like, ne? "Hello, hello, hello, hello you coal black smith You have done me no harm You never shall have my maidenhead That I have kept so long I'd rather die a maid Ah, but then she said and be buried all in my grave Than to have such a nasty, husky, dusky, fusky, musky Coal black smith A maiden I will die She became a duck, a duck all on the stream And he became a water dog and fetched her back again She became a star, a star all in the night And he became a thundercloud and muffled her out of sight She became a rose, a rose all in the wood And he became a bumble bee and kissed her where she stood" etc, etc. I really like Stephin's take on it though. |

"Who remembers every dress you ever wore..." Oh, that line kicks my butt every time. Love it. |

It sounds to me that one of them got a girl pregnant, but the baby died. Maybe they both used her, because I think it's still his best friend's girl in the second verse, so they're both sharing the guilt. One feels more guilty about the baby, and the other feels more guilty about trying to escape the guilt of the first think, and in effect kills his girl by neglecting her in her time of need. All the guilt behind it could be natural guilt you feel from your child dying, or because he was neglected (because they were so young, freshmen, they didn't take it so seriously) I think it's this way rather than Missboy's non baby interpretation, mainly because of the line "She was touching her face" it always sounded like an outside party. She's touching the face of her little baby girl, who is the one she really fell in love with. And he's trying to escape the blame by saying "well, it was her baby and she fell in love with it, so it's her fault she feels bad, and I'm not going to feel bad for neglecting them" trying to escape the blame and the guilt, even though it's obviously overwhelming him. |

"But I'd rather be working for a paycheck Than waiting to win the lottery" Okay, everyone and their grandma has already commented on this line, but I just saw confusion about it that made my mind boggle a little. Personally, I thought this was the most hopeful, endearing line in the whole song. I don't think it's anything as concrete as "with a paycheck you know you'll always have it" because he doesn't know if he'll always have this girl. But you have to work at a relationship like you do a job. It takes effort that you're willing to put into the relationship. Lottery.. lottery is for the people who want the big money, but are too lazy to actually *do* something about it. And yes, I mean lazy, because relying on the lottery to get you out is such a stupid plan. It's a non-plan. But working for a paycheck means he's putting his life into her. He's interested in trying and in making it work. It's the perfect line, I think, for starting a relationship of this nature. |

| Everyone's correcting the lyrics, but that's what the song I'm listening to says. Maybe there are just 2 versions... | |
