I don't think the song is about a break up; I think it's more about the fear of a break up, of something going wrong in the relationship. I've been in similar situations with girlfriends in the past. This is my interpretation: Gray, quiet and tired and mean Picking at a worried seam I try to make you mad at me over the phone To me this part is saying that she's afraid that the relationship she's in won't last because of trust or self-esteem issues and it's made her withdrawn, suspicious, and agitated trying to figure it all out, so she tries to see how he really feels by getting a rise out of him, making him angry so the truth comes out if it's not what she wants it to be. Red eyes and fire and signs I'm taken by a nursery rhyme I want to make a ray of sunshine and never leave home This part is saying that she's been so sad that she's cried (red eyes), she's been very angry (red fire being a symbol for anger) because she believes she is seeing warning signs (Red signs) that things might go wrong. I think the taken by a nursery rhyme line is a glimpse at how she yearns to see their relationship and love for each other, something sweet and pure like a fairy tale or a nursery rhyme. Even though real life relationships aren't always sweet and pure, she wants to create this feeling that they're so content and happy with each other in their own little world (make a ray of sunshine and never leave home). No amount of coffee, no amount of crying No amount of whiskey, no amount of wine No, nothing else will do I've gotta have you, I've gotta have you I think that the chorus is her explanation for why she can't help but feel that way, because she knows that she's so in love with him that nothing could ease the pain of not being with him. The road gets cold There's no spring in the middle this year I'm the new chicken clucking open hearts and ears Oh, such a prima donna, sorry for myself But green, it is also summer And I won't be warm till I'm lying in your arms Her actual thoughts are that she's afraid the relationship will end (the road gets cold) because the intimacy will eventually run out (no spring in the middle this year), most likely because she knows she can't stop worrying and nagging him for constant reassurance (I'm a new chicken clucking open hearts and ears). The rest is just saying that she knows she's a drama queen; but that she can't help being that way because (aside from the worrying) she's so happy to be with him and she just knows that she would never feel good again without him there beside her. I see it all through a telescope: Guitar, suitcase, and a warm coat Lying in the back of the blue boat Humming a tune... I think this part is just more of a glimpse into what she dreams their relationship will be like in the future; the items and situations described make me think of romance, adventure, and bliss. |

Here's my interpretation: "I did a sick, sick thing to my love My lack of loyalty, it swallowed her up And she cooked me food She squirmed and turned Like a skeleton key" The guy telling the story had a girlfriend. She's the kind of girl who moves from one guy to another losing interest when she gets them hooked. The narrator doesn't show her that she's important to him. So she does things for him like cooking him food even though it's outside of her nature and she'd rather be moving on to someone else because he has her hooked. That's what the skeleton key part is about she likes to open every door like the key. "She left her man and attended to me And don't call me that Don't claim you love me Cause you know that ain't true" She left the guy she was with to get with the narrator, but he knows how she really is so he tells her not to call him her man or claim that she loves him because he knows that it's all just infatuation over the unobtainable. "My dire affliction I'll attribute to you And you're finally free To twist and turn Like a skeleton key" The problem is that he really does love her, but he knows how she really is so he breaks up with her so she can go back to her normal routine before he gets in too deep and she loses interest first. "I did a horrible thing to that girl I bread my misery and drowned it in her And she got me high And I hardly noticed there were tears in her eyes" He could drown his problems in her and she made him happy, but he couldn't get over the fact of how he knows her to really be, so he doesn't even notice her tears because he believes that her heartache is all a front. "And I miss you less and less everyday This stream of whisky's helped to wash you away And it's clear to see You're nothing special You're a skeleton key" He knows he's better off with out her because once he had let his guard down with her she would have left, but he's still in love with her so he drinks to take the pain away. I think the "gotta let me know" part is about him wanting her to show him through her actions that she really was the same person so he could feel like he did the right thing by breaking up with her. That's what it means to me because I had this same situation happen to me, just my two cents. |
