It is about fighting with something within yourself, whether it be addiction, cancer, depression.....and feeling it take your life from you. All you can do to make it better sometimes is to imagine an angel coming to carry you and seperate you from the pain.
I listened to this song when I was told I would die from Cancer.
It brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear it. |

It is indeed about a girl who commited suicide in Gainesville, Florida, in the tall dorms on the UF campus' grounds. Tom Petty lived in Gainesville with band members. The girl wanted a life with more to it, she was a Dreamer....meaning that she had dreams of loving this 'he' the song refers to and having him love her just as equally. Something went wrong somewhere along the way....When the dreams were shattered, she snapped, and unfortunately took her life to end the pain she felt inside. |

It is about the end of sharing a love that was thought of as undying. It is refering to the King (God....good) and the Snake (serpent...devil..evil). The chaos he felt as a child impacted his relationship, it confused him emotionally.
Blue Bus refers to a bus that runs on the coast of California, where Jim lived around the time this song was written and possibly holds memories for him and his love...I'm sure he rode the bus many times during while on acid with her as well, must have been confusing, reminding him of the doubt in his everyday life.
He could never get past the things he experienced in childhood. Because of this, his relationship came to an end. That's just what I get from the song |
