If what FaaipDeOaid posted about horses being symbolic of the tie to reality. Then you could say that flying over them means releasing yourself from reality and what holds you here. But unlike the man speaking in the song (who seems to have had some bad things happen to turn him into a pessimist), the writer believe that when you die you don't "pass into the night", instead you fly over and past everything that was previously holding you down, however the man just won't listen and change his mind. |

To me it seems like he's trying to say that sometimes he can't really see the end to everything, maybe the pain and fustration he's feeling towards something, and he's trying to escape by "dreaming", which I personally view as being related to escapism, maybe drugs? Forgetting where the dream began could be him showing his fear towards really losing himself, to truely giving in and just forgetting everything that's real, that he won't be in control anymore. The second verse makes me think that maybe people are trying to help him, "you kept your hand on my chest", they're there for him but he doesn't want them to be, he doesn't want them to help, he just wants to escape. In a way I guess the final verse could be seen as slightly ironic, "Look at me dreaming, I'm so happy" contrasts very much so with the feel of the song which is very morose and detatched, almost in it's own way like a dream. Although it could also be viewed as a celebration of the release that he finally feels in his "dreams". Oh and in relation to the Chumscrubber, which this song [rare as it is] was chosen for. Then you could say that it was chosen for the Link to Troys escape, as who's to say at the end of the song his sleeping isn't actually the sleep that is death? Anywho this song and the Chumscrubber kick ass, and I really had to comment on this song, as not many people have! [For shame!] |

This was my first NIN song&it means so much to me. I can only guess really. I love where you guys have gone with this song. But I must point out the connection I see between the war described at the beginning and the old man at the end. People who fought for our their country years ago are basically forgotten when they return home. Prehaps the old man described at the end fought in the war that began in the beginning. Well that's how I see it. |

I know it's probably just me and my messed up head, but I can see references to S&M... And yes I know it isn't the focus of the song, in my opinion this song refers to hating both others and yourself and wanting to hurt and be hurt. Well that's what I think at least... |
