Third Eye Blind – Persephone Lyrics 19 years ago
This is an excellent song! To me, it is about a guy who has been hurt before and finds someone he thinks is excellent and won't hurt him, but as it turns out, he is more into her than she is to him. See below:

1) "...And the light she finds is golden, And I can't take my eyes away. But I'm no longer welcome and this is not my place to stay." To me, that is the singer saying that he finds her to be the most enchanting person ever, and is completely into her, but she no longer feels that way about him, and he knows he has no say in the matter.

2) "And I'm playing songs without you in an empty space. With the guitar that you brought me I pull from a velvet case." He is trying desperately to hold on to memories of this girl and can't let go. At the same time, velvet is a soft, warm material, so there are clearly paradoxical ideas there, where she hurt him and he feels cold and lonely but is looking for the warmth that she brought him.

3) "Persephone, Can you stop the moment bleeding?" This to me means that he sees her as the only solution, and the only cure, to his heartache, which is such a common feeling after you get hurt.

4) "...Naked by your side, the one place I never lied." That is saying that he was always honest and upfront with her, and that he didn't put up facades or fronts.

5) "...And all that I can give you is an open door. And it all it swings to lightly, I won't be through there anymore." He is saying that all he can offer is his true and honest self, and can't pretend to be something he is not. To me, this means he wants to be serious with her, and she can leave if she wants, which it seems she did. And the door metaphor is very interesting. It is very visual and symbolic. I think he is saying that he wants something heavy, not a light relationship of convenience.

6) "I pushed away your summer greed. I want the promise of a real spring." This means that he sees her as selfish and unfair, and is not willing to compromise what he wants, which is something "real."

7) "All emotion's coming back to me." This repeating refrain means that this pain is bringing back past heartache. That could mean that this is not the first time she has hurt him, or it could mean that he thought she wouldn't hurt him, but she did just like all the girls in his past.

8) "I sit by myself. And memories all are one. In the last light of the sun." Lots of imagery to discuss in this short verse. He is acknowledging that he is now alone again, whether he likes it or not. His memories are all one, as in all of his hurt has melded together and created the impression of a painstaking life. The last line, to me, is the most perplexing and curious. It could mean that he has decided to commit suicide. Or, it could mean that he has resigned himself to a life of pain or hurt, or even loneliness.

The seasonal theme here is a metaphor, I think. Spring represents warmth, rebirth, and beauty, as well as a certain care-free feel. He uses a chilly imagery to represent loneliness and hurt. And he uses summer, which is a very extreme season, to represent her personality. In otehr words, she is so far from selfless that she is the equivalent of summer. However, I am surprised he didn't use winter for that, as that would seem more fitting to personify her cold and selfish ways.

Thoughts, here?
