Eminem – Stan Lyrics 19 years ago
Eminem wrote this song to show that his hateful lyrics are written only for the money he earns from the albums, and that people follow capitalistic artists blindly without realizing that they're in it for the money.

Green Day – American Idiot Lyrics 19 years ago
1) The closest thing you'll find to mainstream punk is NOFX or Anti-Flag, maybe Rise Against. That's as mainstream as punk gets. Green Day is pop, lets refer to them as such.

2) Your mention of guitar terminology didn't piss me off, the pretentious way you went about it did.

"
You mentioned Pantera but neglected Dimebag Darrel and his unsatiable urge for pinch harmonics.

You mentioned Tool yet neglected to state their unnatural love of bass and bass drum, not to mention some wicked vocals and sick guitar."

That's you. That's you getting all high and mighty because Shard didn't go into detail about WHY he liked these bands. It's lame, it's transparent, and it's not impressing anyone.

3) I was unaware that attending a top-ranked liberal arts school that runs 40k a year was something to be frowned upon. I guess I'll write those law school professors back and tell them that their praise for my school was misplaced because someone who knew nothing about it thought it sucked.

4) "I felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear that stone of leaves
I wander out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed"

Awful.

"Always it's coming
and here starts the game
why can't this puzzle be solved?
Each time it happens it's always the same
I look down and it starts to fell
And all I see
It burns my eyes
Burning all inside"

Impressively awful. Stick to defending Metallica, Tool, Lacuna Coil, A Perfect Circle, Killswitch... you know, bands that can actually write lyrics instead of just slapping together some vaguely unsettling phrases.

5) We're back to the mainstream punk thing again I see. No, I'm not defending those you think of as "mainstream punk." Even Korn and Slipknot can write better lyrics than Green Day, Good Charlotte, and Simple Plan (none of which are punk bands).

Because Korean has a stick up his ass. He wants everyone to know that he understands guitar terminology and is able to pick out musical elements from a song. The best way to do this is to get all indignant when people don't mention specific details about a band that he likes. See above for examples.

Also, he believes that metal "owns punk in every aspect." I'm not sure anyone would agree that metal is better lyrically or with regard to motive, but I'm sure Korean will argue that too.

Korean, Shard, Domination... you're all idiots. Kindly bathe with a toaster so the rest of us can enjoy music in peace.

Boo Green Day. They can bathe with toasters too.

@KOREAN:

First of all, the driving force behind true punk isn't nonconformity. Thirty years ago, sure, but that's an impossible ideal these days, with the pervasiveness of media institutions and popularization of punk music. The true punk scene today is driven by progressive thought and a DIY ethic. Sometimes, of course, the DIY ethic must be compromised in order to spread a political message, such as in the case of Anti-Flag. However, they have worked to maintain complete control over their musical sound and lyrics even after switching to a major label, and it is their that I believe this ethic is preserved.

Also, just because a band doesn't incorporate incredible guitar solos, this doesn't mean that this should detract from their value as a band. Punk was started as a simple, three- or four-chord rhythm, anthemic type of music designed to energize and unite the listeners. Take The Ramones' "My Brain is Hanging Upside Down." Very simple guitar, easy solo, but the presentation makes you want to stand right next to The Ramones, protesting Reagan's trip to Bitburg.

@T-CAP:

I might be with you if the lyrics didn't suck so goddamn hard. They're hypocritical, poorly written, simple, and just not comparable to any real punk lyrics, which tend to be meaningful and inspiring. Let's compare "American Idiot" to another song about the mainstream media, "The Press Corpse" by Anti-Flag.

American Idiot
-----------------

Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue.

The Press Corpse
----------------------
Diversion and aversion is the flavor of the day
Was it WMDs? Or Democracy?
Blame it on MI-6 or the CIA
The White House Press Corpse only has one thing to say…

“We don’t want to talk about it!”

The White House boils over, “Al Jazeera got it wrong!”
The Press Corpse jumps onboard singing the White House song
While over in Iraq thousands are dead because of lies
The spineless war drumming-press corpse have taken lives.

Wow, what's that I see? Specific accusations? Hints at solutions? Not being too afraid to offend the far right? I know, you'll say that Green Day is critical of the Bush Administration too. Wrong. Green Day softens their criticism to the point where a Bush-worshipper could listen to this whole album and become only mildly peeved. True punk doesn't give a shit where your alliances fall; you're going to hear what we have to say whether you like it or not.

@SHARD:

I got a ruler out and measured the drawing of your penis you posted (which I assumed was drawn on a 1:1 scale because you didn't state otherwise). Apparently you have a 2.5 inch penis and you're proud of it. Keep in mind that I have a 19" monitor, which is pretty large, and it's still under 3 inches. Impressive.

1. It's very ignorant to pretend to know that anything or anyone will forever encapsulate the superlative of any attribute.

2. How can a chicken testicle become sodomized?

3. I don't think God answers prayers from hateful maggots like you.

4. Again, why does it matter if they are gay (which they aren't)?

5. Penguins don't have orgies. Dolphins do, though. Look it up.

6. Tell me some of these "true rock bandss." I'm sure they're not in dire financial straits because of a financially small punk music industry.

Shard, I'm pretty sure the Village People were the gayest band ever. Please understand that homosexuality is not directly proportional to musical inability. I can use two examples to illustrate why this is true.

1. Elton John is very gay, and he is an extremely talented musician. I personally don't care for more than a few songs of his, but his talent is undeniable. Other notable homosexual artists include Freddy Mercury, Brandon Boyd, and Rufus Wainwright.

2. You are probably an awful musician who has no place degrading others' work with such laughable inattention to actual depth, and yet I would assume by your homophobic rants that you are indeed not gay.

See, it's logic. You made a claim, I proved you wrong with counterexamples. Every intellectual since Aristotle has accepted this critical method of argument as the best available to the human mind; therefore, every intellectual since Aristotle would most certainly agree that you, sir, are a dumbass.

Conceptually, it is great. However, you'd be much better off listening to Anti-Flag's "The Press Corpse" if you want to hear some good digs at mainstream media. That's the difference between Anti-Flag and Green Day: Anti-Flag uses their fame to put out a political message, and Green Day uses their political message to garner fame.

Shard, shut up. We don't want to hear homophobic, egocentric, misinformed opinions from a prepubescent dumbass whose I.Q. aspires to the three-digit range.

If you'd read past the first three words in my post (which I know must be a challenge; literacy for people like you usually is) you'd know that I don't like Green Day either. However, I have actual reasons, whereas you seem intent on squirting foul hate-shit all over this board. We know you hate gay people. Huzzah. Now stuff it.

"Punk is Dead."

Not true. The reason your tiny minds can't seem to grasp this is because true punk was never really out in the mainstream, therefore your limited experience with it caused you to believe that it "died" when it faded from the commercial shelves. Panic! and Armor for Sleep are not punk; emo is not punk, pop-punk, despite the name, is not punk (unless you count Anti-Flag and NOFX as pop-punk, which would be a misnomer; these two, while popular punk bands, are not pop-punk).

Even old Green Day wasn't punk, it was just less poppy than their current stuff. With the exception of a few songs, most of Green Day's older stuff is juvenile humor.

Look at bands like Dropkick Murphys, Time Again, Bad Religion, Pennywise, Social Distortion, Sick of it All, U.S. Bombs, Strike Anywhere, Propagandhi, Suicide Machines, Jello Biafra, Rise Against, Busholini, The Brokedowns, Cheap Sex, Love Equals Death, The Casualties, Strung Out, the Real McKenzies...

Punk is not dead. It's just not forced down your throats the way pop bands like Green Day are.

Wait a minute... did you even check to see how many comments "Stairway to Heaven" has gotten? I looked over there and saw over 40 pages of comments, as opposed to the 5 pages here.

Green Day – American Idiot Lyrics 19 years ago
It's because those are actual rock bands, and songs like "Stairway to Heaven" were written before songmeanings.net existed. This was a chart-topping pop song that came out after it was mainstream for everyone to use the internet and post on forums such as this. If "Stairway to Heaven" came out now, and received the commercial success of "American Idiot," it would have just as many comments, I guarantee it.

Micaela, you've successfully rambled on for five lines without making a single effective point. All right, I concede that SOME people are probably afraid to criticize America. But not being afraid to criticize America (on foreign soil, no less) isn't something to brag about.

So tell me, what exactly is this AMERICAN REALITY you speak of? I assure you that it won't be pointless to try and make me see it for what it is.

Oh, and please don't say "u." It makes you sound like you're just another thirteen-year-old girl who blindly follows whatever mainstream media puts out. In fact, I think this band called Green Day wrote a song about you...

Strike Anywhere – To The World Lyrics 19 years ago
This song speaks against nationalism, and is akin to Anti-Flag's "No Borders, No Nations," another outstanding song. Strike Anywhere tries to show that as humans, it is our duty to place our loyalty to mankind as a whole above loyalty to any single government or nation. Absolutely outstanding.

Green Day – American Idiot Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is certainly a true depiction of how media controls American lifestyle. However, Green Day does nothing but contribute to this media frenzy. They don't address any specific issues; rather, they prefer to write vague songs that are relative to EVERY Westernized society. Then they have the nerve to tell their fans in Britain, "We're not afraid to criticize America." Well guess what dipshits? Nobody's afraid to criticize America; you're not special. Oh, and by the way: your criticism isn't constructive, intelligent, or specific enough to enact any real change. This is not punk. This is thinly-veiled pop music that pretends to have a spirit of rebellion. If you want to hear real punk, with real criticisms and real offers of solutions, listen to Anti-Flag, Bad Religion, U.S. Bombs, Social Distortion, or Strike Anywhere. Please, end the obsession with this gutless band and their gutless songs.

Investigative journalism is dying, and it's only partly the media corporations' fault. Just today, Gitmo threw out the remaining reporters that were observing prison conditions and reactions to the triple suicides. Fuck people like Rupert Murdoch for letting money dictate the news, and fuck the government for abridging freedom of the press.

Anti-Flag – This Is The End (For You My Friend) Lyrics 19 years ago
Not to mention that Anti-Flag was approached by several major labels, and RCA was the only one that would let them keep complete control over their music and lyrics. This is their only album that's 100% political. Nothing was softened up a bit. They did not sell out.

Anti-Flag – One Trillion Dollars Lyrics 19 years ago
Shut up, Viral. Anti-Flag was turned away by several new record companies before they finally signed with RCA. This song is definitely the worst on the new album, but the message is powerful. I'd say this is their best politica-minded album to date, and it's easy to see that by their sound and lyrics they haven't sold out.
