Bright Eyes – I Must Belong Somewhere Lyrics 18 years ago
the only reason things "belong" is because humans decided that... without our judgement nothing would have a place. this is what i think he means by "they locked the devil in the basement, threw god up into the air"

it's really comforting but not at the same time. i take it to mean just putting your trust in the universe and hoping that everything turns out for the best, even though evil does exist through this as there is still racism and cruelty. if the thing about the panic attack is true then it's really interesting as it really does capture the essence of panic; wanting to give in to the universe ( seen as irrational) but you want to keep your head and rationality at the same time.

Bright Eyes – Coat Check Dream Song Lyrics 18 years ago
a lot of conor's songs reference only being depressed in the winter, so i've always felt the lyrics : "walked into the winter, came out on the other side" represented him embracing sadness, and everything that came with it (dependancy on drugs etc) and allowing that to make him happy... thus coming "out on the other side" - happiness.

however, he then goes on to say " short sleeves in the winter, fell back through the other side"
this to me, could either mean he fell back into happiness, as he got comfortable (short sleeves) with his way of life or he fell into something different that's much worse than his winter sadness for the same reason.

The Network – Spastic Society Lyrics 19 years ago
i think this song is so clever. when i was listening to this song, each of the random words reminded me of something: "definition" made me think of high definition tvs.
"prescription" made me think of depression and being prescribed prozac or something.
"centrefold" made me think of celebrity or porn magazines.
i think this song was designed to make the listener think about WHY we associate these words with these sorts of things, and it's because of the medias influence over our lives, i believe.
this makes sense, as if you've ever read the sort of "mission statement" from the network: "Their quest is to dominate the airwaves thus getting rid if the mindless shit that has been dominating the radio and television "
so it makes sense for this song to be about the society we are living in and how we depend on television, magazines, whatever, to escape our own reality and live someone elses.
i think the "satellite. disconnect. goodnight" represents how when we disconnect ourselves from the media, we disconnect with what we think is 'ourselves'. so we switch off and sleep through life.

i think it's about accepting that you, yourself are a very powerful human being. also, about wanting to make a difference etc.
i get this from the lines "i want to breathe life into the dead sea" and again from the line "i see the curvature of the earth and i want to make it flat" cause it's like, feeling powerful enough to destroy/make the world a better place, because we, as humans have the abilitiy to do so.

The Used – Listening Lyrics 19 years ago
i agree with fentoozler about the song being very much about fustration.
from the lyrics i get the impression that who the song is directed at, the author and them were very close- "your skin attatched, this fragile cliche of my broken heart attack" but for some reason they have grown apart and there has been a big sutation where he has not been able to cope with this 'broken heart attack'.
from the lyrics "you need to swallow your teeth, hang out stay for a while", i get the feeling that either swalling teeth is swallowing her (i'm using her just because, it could be a he) words and not giving her opinion on his life, emotions etc and just hang out because he needs company. though i also get the impression from the same words that it's a violent relationship and they fight alot and teeth are broken... and he is saying forget about that now and just hang out and stay for a while because he needs the company and he does like her, just not when she is talking about what he should do with his life, or her opinions or thoughts.
the bridge could be a reference to the violence and fighting. he wants them to be dead, but their heart is still beating but it must be the blood, they can't still be alive after all that's happened. i feel that this whole song is about the author wanting to destroy somebody for ruining the auhors live once, and causing him alot of pain and now they want to pretend lke everything is still ok.
after the initial confusion with the bridge lyrics, he is saying it doesn't even matter, because he isn't listening anyway. this is him giving up and not caring if he is falling or not.
then he is changing again "lights out i can't stand to hear you scream" he is telling them to shut up. i feel as though this is about having sex, and him wanting the lights off because he cannot stand to be that intimate with someone he has such a strong hatred for. the lyrics - "when we were making love i was fast asleep" as he's used the words 'making love' which is something that should be special, he was fast asleep. this is basically him trying to bring her down, and hurt her in every way he can. "the night sky better give something up" - after all of this is done he better get rewarded for putting up with it.
"if todays worth living it probably is"- sounds as though he is being more positive but then it goes on to the repetition of "im not listening anyway" maybe trying to convince himself that he isn't listening, and he doesn't care on others opinions as long as he is happy in his own self it is all that really matters.

Alexisonfire – Drunks, Lovers, Sinners And Saints Lyrics 19 years ago
perhaps this is them introducing the album. and a generally pissed off song aimed at those who doubt them, and fakes. and they are saying that they have not changed (not a jaded hair upon my head) and that they have given this album their everything. "i wont change" reinforces this, that they will not change their style for anyone or any stupid scenes. this new album is so GOOD. this song just cements them as a close band- "my heart is strong, we ride to fight". :)

Saosin – Voices Lyrics 19 years ago
when you fight with loved ones, you turn into a different person. i think it is about maybe a family member or a girlfriend, and they've had an argument and things can't go back to being the same again because they have shown their true feelings towards him.
"your waiting for your bodys re entry again"- maybe this is about the loved one, they are waiting to be allowed back into the writers trust but they just can't let them. either that, or that they are waiting to feel the same way they did before but it is impossible after the things said, or the "voices".

Alexisonfire – Rough Hands Lyrics 19 years ago
i think that he is denying his commitment to a women. this is evident from the line " it doesn't matter because i am not her man"
the first verse states how nothing is ever good enough for her and she critiscises the way he acts.
"Well, I'd swear every other word if I could or would make an attempt" - he is getting sick of her constantly having a go at him, and he would do whatever he could to make her as unhappy as he is, but he is too tired.
"Sometimes love isn't about how much he worships you
Or how much you're willing to change to suit them" - he has tried to worship her and change to suit her, but he feels that love means putting up with her. he is so sick of the routine of her not being satisfied he is questioning the meaning of love. he wants her to love him but no matter what he does it isn't good enough for her.
but he is so tired from working and the routine of every day life that he is giving up on a relationship. he feels bad about the way he is neglecting her but there is nothing that he can, or wants to do about it.
i think that perhaps the girlfriend is hard work and he has to work alot at the relationship causing to have "rough hands", no matter what he does it doesn't satisfy her.
"one day she will say "im tired"- one day she will get rid of him because she is bored of him, and theres nothing that he can do about that because he has tried his hardest.
All my bones are dust
And my heart's sealed with rust
These hands will always be rough
I know these wont count for much - the bones and hearts are what keeps humans going and he feels as if he is falling apart. he feels that his hands will always be rough and coarse and never good enough for anyone, and he thinks he knows that he won't count for much either.

Alexisonfire – Side Walk When She Walks Lyrics 19 years ago
it doesn't really have anything to do with age :/ it's about how you interprete it anyway.
this song is really good though. it's different from alot of alexisonfire as we've established but it works well.
though, to me this song is about a women trying to be with a man because of the lyrics : "lets be honest you know you shouldn't bother, because with me it is impossible to win"
i think that this woman means so much to him that it is hard for him to be intimate with her, because he is scared of fucking things up. as sex changes everything and he thinks too deep to be able to have one night stands etc.
"dressed to kill you look so right"- this is her dressing up for him, and how she looks right for sex but still he cannot do it. she is making the effort, then after he is saying that she really shouldn't bother because he doesn't feel normal for thinking like this.
i get the feeling that he is scared of being close to her, physically or mentally from the line "now i am scared of open water" perhaps he has been hurt by others before when he has let them into his trust.
then from the lines "your wounds are opening wide" maybe this is her exposing her true self to him, and being completely honest and then he is saying "they might be just my size" he is saying maybe now he is ready because they have been completely clean and 'open' together.
perhaps the lines "there was always a warmth between us" is him trying to justify the fact that what they did together was ok. because this song could also be referencing that he feels guilty about having sex with women.
the repitition of "just my size" is just reinforcing to himself and the audience that his actions were justified.

i prefer the acoustic version. to me this song is about an event that has happened before ("overdone") possibly about family, or a break up. it's about someone close being lost to two people, and it appears that the other person is turning on the author and telling them they were the one that should have been lost. and they are standing up for themselves. i prefer the acoustic.

Saosin – They Perched on Their Stilts, Pointing and Daring Me to Break Custom Lyrics 19 years ago
they perch on their stilts - they look disaprovingly from a height, thinking they are better. they probably referring to peers, drug addicts. maybe members of Saosin (of course, i have to link everything back to Saosin, drugs and relationships)

daring you to break custom- anthony was clearly religious, and alot of the lyrics he wrote were related to drugs use. he didn't want to do drugs, these people that thought they were 'higher' and better than him looked down on him for not using. and they tried to push him into using.

the first verse is about trying to hide from who he realy is, his beleifs etc :
"on my face i have scratched out something like silhouette" - he has moulded himself into something he was not before, to keep his "aquaintances"happy.

when he mentions about the notebook and not being able to write a thing, the notebook is representing his life and at this time he is not "sensing" his life at the moment. perhaps this is him being dragged into drugs, and he cannot sense his life, and he is no longer able to write lyrics because of this. this could be an indication as to why he split from Saosin. because the rest of the band were into drugs and he did not want that to effect his song writing ability?

"i'll dance around, i honestly give up and de robe" this could be a religous reference about the "de robe". he has given up his beleive, he also seems pretty angry at whoever this song is directed at : "i hope you don't see a thing"

Heaven looks greacefully on you, I owe you too - he is saying that he owes these people/person for showing him how not to act, and showing what drugs can do to you.

Circa Survive – Act Appalled Lyrics 19 years ago
most likely him talking to the audience he is aiming this song at. or perhaps himself.
he is clearly talking about being original and not falling in line with what society believes is right.
though he is also trying to convince people (perhaps society) that he is infact 'normal'.
this is evident from the lines:
"make them drink, tell them it's only water"
maybe he istrying to convince himself he is someone he is not? the whole tone of this song is very confused, i feel.
"both we and our words are produced by influence"
he is trying to say that nothing is original anymore. perhaps this song is a sarcastic look at people who beleive they do not conform to what they think society beleives is acceptable when infact they are the definition of 'normal'.
i don't know, it doesn't allow much room to elaborate, infact i think the lyrics might just mean what they say.

from the lyrics i am aware he wrote in Saosin, i think his family could have been into drugs. or perhaps close friends that he is constantly trying to help, and feels useless when he can't. i don't think he does do drugs because alot of his songs have religous references such as Bury Your head : "and the psalms will soon recall me again", and that song is about helping someone through an addiction, in my opinion.

Saosin – I Can Tell Lyrics 19 years ago
i posted this on the other version, but this could be about somebodys father cheating, and in this version their mother turning to alcohol to numb the pain of that?
We try but Avalon is always beside me. - someone or something to stop them from suceeding. the 'we' bit could be referring to his father and him, trying to stop his mother. OR both him and his mother trying to sort themselves out.
And I'm falling apart, where is my home? - self explainatory. he doesn't know where he feels right. could be he is spending some time at another home, his fathers or mothers.
A riot grows and his eyes open up. - perhaps they have been pretending to be OK for a while now, but deep inside them there is this riot growing, and his father is needing to talk about it. "his eyes open up" maybe he sees the light, and that is that his wife is cheating. and he leaves the family, so it is just the mother and son now.
"I once believed I would set you in line" - he used to think he could sort things out for his family himself, but he can't and he feels useless. maybe he once believed he could keep his father from leaving.
"If only I had the strength then maybe you could believe in something else." - if the mother is an alcoholic, she is making the author half low self esteem, as he feels he cannot help her. this is a typical feeling in children who have alcoholics as parents. i think that here is might say "til the end", though. it definitly does not sound like "something else". though that does appear to make more sense, as in looking for something more useful than alochol. maybe he blames himself for the sad events happening around him, reference to his father leaving. he doesn't feel strong enough to make anything right happen, though he is trying so hard.
"if you keep asking me i'll melt away in the summer air "- could be his mother talking, if the child keeps on asking her about her addictions or problems she will leave him too (melt away in the summer air).
"it won't hurt half as much and i'll beg for you to stop it now "- child speaking, i don't care if you leave just be honest, (it wont hurt half as much) and the begging bit is self explaintory, he'l beg her to stop.
"if you keep asking me i'll melt away in the summer air"- repeition to show that his mother is being blunt, and almost neglectful towards him
"It won't hurt half as much and I'll beg for you to just tell me something. " - if she leaves it won't hurt half as much as her lying to him all the time, and neglected him. he just wants to know something to help him through, perhaps.

"the alpha waves and power cables everywhere" - alpha males needing to prove themselves through DIY around the house etc, referencing to the power cables. this could also be referencing to the fact he feels bad about cheating, so he is trying to make it up to the family by doing alot of work around the house. OR the 'alpha waves' could be about numerous men coming in and out of the house. and the pwoer cables representing that his mother isn't taking very good care of the house. and it neglecting both her son and the house.
"exercising self-control" - when you cheat you have no self control. maybe this has happened before and the dad is trying to 'excercise self control' or this could be about the mother, as she is drinking she has no self control. i don't know, i thought i had worked it out with the other version but this one confuses me because it seems like the mother is the alcoholic and cheater, and the father is trying to do better by being the 'alpha' male trying to prove himself etc.
"The child calls and she lies open". - she is lying openly, not even attempting to hide the fact she isn't telling the truth. or this could be a reference to her sleeping with other men? unlikely though.
"I once believed if only I was thinking at all." - this sounds like he is looking back on past experinces (namely, his mother lying to him, and him beleiving it) and feeling stupid about it, and embarassed. it appears also to be quite sarcastic.

You stole out like my life. - she was in charge of his life, but she 'stole out'
So I'm engaged to smile. - but he has to smile and get on with things. maybe this is indicating that he had seen more than a person his age should. but he is wiser than to just sit around and dwell on things so he has to smile and pretend not to notice what a failure his parents and upbringing were. it's a clever way to end the song, because it seems as though even a trauma has happened he can forget about it now and use his past experiences to shape his future.
that's my take on it anyway. x

Saosin – I Can Tell Lyrics 19 years ago
"if only i
haven't strayed"
sounds like it's about cheating.
"excercising self control" also supports this.

this might be a little far fetched but this could be about somebodys dad cheating?

"the alpha waves and power cables everywhere" - alpha males needing to prove themselves through DIY around the house etc, referencing to the power cables.

"exercising self-control" - when you cheat you have no self control. maybe this has happened before and the dad is trying to 'excercise self control'

"the child calls" - maybe anthony/cove sees themselves as the child, and they are trying to talk to their father about it

"and he lies open i" - he is clearly lying about it. maybe the child is asking about what is happening between the parents.
i once believed
"if only i'd been thinking at all" - he beleived his father, but now as he look sback he realises he wasn't thinking right at all, and he wanted to beleive him so badly it clouded his true judgement.

"if only i, haven't said, you become even just be something else "- perhaps begging them to stop, and just be something else? but the bit about "if only i, haven't said" could be the reason his father left, because he was found out? i don't know, i'm pretty tired but this does seem like a logic explaination, perhaps.

"if you keep asking me i'll melt away in the summer air "- could be his dad talking, if the child keeps on asking him about it he will leave (melt away in the summer air)
"it won't hurt half as much and i'll beg for you to stop it now "- child speaking, i don't care if you leave just be honest, (it wont hurt half as much) and the begging bit is self explaintory, he'l beg him to stop.
"if you keep asking me i'll melt away in the summer air"- repeition to show that his father is being blunt with him.
"it won't hurt half as much and i'll beg for you just tell me someday" - the child asking to be honest with him someday

"you swore
off like my eyes" - maybe this is them trying to give clues to who they are talking about. because father and son often have same eyes?
"you wanted
so i'm engaged to smile" - the father wanted to him to smile, so he had to even though he didn't beleive the lies.

that's how i interperate it anyway. x

Alexisonfire – Control Lyrics 19 years ago
alexisonfire always seem to write inspiring lyrics, or at least words that can be interpretated as inspiration for their audience. i think they do it well, without sound too cheesy or life saving like say, my chemical romance.

a couple of lyrics-
"this burden is not a heavy one but i assure you it is present" this could be a reference to growing up, puberty. everyone goes through it, it's not a hard thing to get over but it definitly appears it at the time.

"you say 'wait until light' " this could be someone putting off something, as mentioned before, it could be a reference to addiction of any sort. i think the light bit could be talking about maybe 'the light at the end of the tunnel, ' or a better day in general. that, or they are living through an artificial night and they think that the light will come to them.
"one more day will go" she/he is wasting their time, just putting it off "until light"
"maybe you should just try, to look past the mirror " i think this could be them trying to say it isn't all about looks, maybe this is what is keeping this person locked away. " see what's inside" - again, it isnt what you look like it's what's inside that counts. it sounds as if he is getting fustrated with the person for having such a selfish obsession.
"something more to your life" their is more to life than this infatuation, you have to go looking for it yourself as it will not just come to you when your hiding away.
"my words won't heal you now, it is you who decides" i can't help you anymore than i have he is saying, you have to make your own mind up, i can't make decisions for you. he can't stop this person from doing what they are doing, and he has helped all he can. the repition of the "it is you who decides" definitly emphasises the point immensly.
"believe that you are just fine" fake it and soon it wil lcome naturally.
"you'll feel so alive" if you just get yourself out of this state that your in now you can enjoy life more. pretty obvious, really.

i think this is a very open song, as everyone has to grow up and everyone goes through problems that they have to just get over and get on with things instead of dwelling on them. :)

he's talking about how he is addicted to sex
he thinks if he just does it one more time then he'll be fine be able to live without it: "lift up her skirt and ill be cured"

but he finds this sort of thing disgusting, and doesn't want to be a part of it
"healed at the horror show"
it's the things he hates that make him feel better

by the way when i saw him i mean the perspective that this song is written in, and yeah i think it is a reference to a clockwork orange.
he switches persons though from "i" to "him"

Poison the Well – Not Within Arms Length Lyrics 19 years ago
this song is about a girl or a friend, who maybe needs help. she/he is distant from everyone. and he is trying to help her, but she doesn't want help: "i'd scrape the stars from the sky and place them in your hands" is him trying to help her, and "if i thought they'd see the light of a day". this seems to me like she doesn't go out anywhere, she just stays home. "but you stand beyond the sun" maybe, this is him trying to explain how important she is to him, that she is greater than the sun. that, or that she just doesnt see the sun anymore."embedded within my concise effort" his effort to help her, to be more than friend perhaps. "maybe if i grew wings/maybe if you lost yours" poison the well have amazing lyrics. i think this is her trying to maybe get away, to fly away. he wants to understand her, so he is wanting to become more like her or she become more like him. i do think this is about someone who won't return his love. "i'm disgusted by the repetition i accept this curse" he just has to accept it, he doesn't want to lose her a tall so they remain friends.
such amazing lyrics though.

Taking Back Sunday – Spin Lyrics 19 years ago
this is my take on it.
the first lines are pretty self explantory. although i'm almost definite he says "and it still suites you just the same" this means that it's happened more than once before. and he's getting bored of it. he's seen it before, and it's getting old.
"you catch on quick" i think is supposed to be sarcastic, as she has done whatever it is so many times before even he is bored of it? not sure though
"the cynics deaf before they give the same reviews" the lyrics are wrong in the ones up there. i'm like 99% sure he says this. this is maybe calling her a cynic, she is critical of everything he does. and she's deaf as even though he might be trying to get it right, she is deaf to him as she has already made up her mind about him.
"this is where, where the party is" this is where it's happening, your going to miss it
"are you coming home?" obvious. is she coming home? he feels that her home is with him , maybe.
but then he goes on to say "you had your chance" basically saying it's over, she's had her chances and she's used them up. the lines so close together makes it seem like he is deliberatly out to hurt her now.
i love this line : "open arms reject assuming hands" i personally think this is adam saying that his arms were open. but she just expects him to be willing to accept her again, no matter what shes done. so her hands are "assuming". i keep on referring to both of them as him and her, i'm not totally sure what they are, but it works both ways.
"the abortion that you had and left you clinically dead and made it all that much easier to lie" maybe not a literal abortion, perhaps something has gone wrong she pushed out of her life. or maybe it was a real abortion. beautiful words though. she kept on lying, and it became easier because she was so unhappy at that time, she felt unreal and dead.
"but that's nothing that i'm proud of" maybe the last line he just said, thinking about it. perhaps it's unfair to blame her as she has been through alot? he's not proud that he's maybe making her even more unhappy. maybe he pushed her in to doing something/
"making an example out of you" he is copying what she did to him. maybe she kicked him while she was down. he's getting his revenge only ten times worse?
"well this is phase one. this is the preview" theres more to come, he isn't done yet. and he's still out to hurt her. or maybe she is still trying to hurt him. this could also be him saying well this is only the beginning, and your going to make things even harder on me. maybe she is putting alot of guilt onto him about the 'abortion;'
"dont act like your the first one" maybe telling her dont act liek shes the first one to be hurt, by him or in general
"i treat it like disease" not sure about these. it sounds quite harsh like,
"sure its rough around the edges" maybe he is talking about the relationship. it's not perfect
"it's the only thing you see" but all she can see is the bad in the relationship, or in life. he seems to range from wanting to still be together, and wanting her to come home. then saying she's had her chance and it's over. maybe teasing her, only to reject her. liek she did to him?
"dont act like you cant see me" maybe he's thinking about going after her. maybe she is ignoring him in life. and he's telling her not to act like that.
i'm pretty sure he's saying "darling, i'm coming" like he is coming after her

Metric – The List Lyrics 19 years ago
I think that the "give my face to the back of your head" is basically wanting to give up and maybe perhaps become like everyone else? that's the feeling i get from when she also says "loyal in your shadow."
i think this could be about the going to shows, wanting to be put on the guest list, perhaps. or just the music industry in general. perhaps trying to get signed, or something like that. it definitly seems like that.
but she is talking to someone else, like someone who she is trying to make the scene with, telling them "that is not our fate", and that they weren't made for being famous and getting onto guest lists.
or maybe she means that she doesn't want to try, and that it's unimportant. also because in this first line she says "all dressed down" like, they have just been out to se what is going on, not trying to get onto the guest lists now. so she just wants to give up and become like everybody else, no longer wants to try to be different with haircuts because all the best ones are taken.

then she is asking questions, like, because this is all elite and whatever, do lawyers have laywers? think this could be referring to what do the people that go to these things and get on guest lists, what do they conform to?

i'm not that sure on the verse. "one more cheap suit in the loop" could be referring to numerous outfits people buy to go to clubs in. "more chlorine" in the pool gives the effect of like, i don't know.. perhaps chemicals? could be relating to drugs, not sure about that though.
"the blonde doll smiling behind us, says one day you'll be just like us" i love this bit, she says it in such a sarcastic voice. obviously referring to the amount of dolls and how everyone appears perfect in the music industry.
the second verse " all dressed up to catch a glimpse of the list" they've dressed up, the opposite to the first line where they were 'dressed down'. they've seen some success, there getting there nearly to be 'on the list'.

the last lines are the best.
"calling from the next hotel"
maybe she is callingbecause she doesn't want to be seen begging, desperate to be on the list. even though she is
"who we are now we will always be" perhaps trying to convince herself, although she carries on ringing around trying to get onto the list.
"the best haircuts are taken" when she sings this it sounds like the person on the phone to her is saying it. like, rejecting her ? don't know.
may be about guilt from feeling the need to want to fit in with these scenes, or i've probably gotten it completely wrong. good song nonetheless
