It seems kind of obvious to me that Dave is religious. Take 'Christmas Song' its one of the most religious songs that doesnt go overboard. Also, i'm not sure at what concert it was but he starts off by saying 'i'm sure this is someone we all respect even if we dont...worship him |

i agree completely with a lot of the comments and i think a lot of people are dead on about this song. it seems to me as if this is a song about the society that we live in. think about your own lives (not trying to depress anybody!) but for the most part, you wake up, eat your breakfast or 'does his teeth bite to eat and hes rolling' and you scoot off to work. think about how one relationship moulds into the next and how we are so frightened of making ourselves heard in a relationship that we end up destroying our own intimate relationships. the title is, in my opinion, perfect. basically, ants do the same thing day in and day out and excluding the odd day, so do we. we live in a world of mindless conformity to an extent. kinda coincidental, the song just popped up on my playlist and i will always be amazed by how Dave is able to take a song that can be in some ways saddening and he does so much with his voice and the band is so amazing that his emotive pitch and singing voice along with the saxophone and drums can make it feel uplifting. amazing. |

at the point he wrote it, this was by far Dave's darkest songs. i don't think that he was ever addicted to heroin 'needle to the vein' but i think that it has a lot to do with alcohol. remember that this is part of Under the Table and Dreaming and as they were making this album, which was before the band hit international 'super-stardom' and even before it caught the eye of the U.S. in a major way, Dave's sister(Anne) was murdered by her husband who proceeded to shoot himself. i believe that this is a song that has a lot to do with the sister. after all, the album is dedicated 'To Anne.' |

To quote Dave 'my songs can be interpreted in many different ways, take your pick' well maybe not the exact quote, dont bitch at me, but it is the right idea. i think that Dave wrote this song about a falling chair according to Dave but he often transforms his songs to have different interpretations. my opinion? its a husband leaving with his wife a minute behind and his hitting a sliding patch of ice and how his life is flashing in front of his eyes. great song |

I agree with it being about Dave's step-father, that's definitely a possibility because i'm pretty sure that this song was written during his 'lillywhite sessions' where dave was drinking pretty heavily. althought the screw you song about the girlfriend that said no to him three times is Halloween, this is simply a mixture of alcohol, his sisters murder and possibly step-fathers song. great song |
