Amy Macdonald – The Road to Home Lyrics 18 years ago
Very simple song about being homesick but very effective and very beautiful. It goes very well with "Caledonia" which is about the singer's love of Scotland. Why it was included as a bonus track is that Amy would sit and sing the song to herself inbetween recording the album because it reminded her of home, her producer convinced her to record it after overhearing her.

Amy Macdonald – Barrowland Ballroom Lyrics 18 years ago
For those who don't know, the Barrowlands Ballroom is a major gig venue in Glasgow which has hosted the likes of David Bowie, Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello.

The building also has a lot of history as it used to be the leading dancehall in Scotland from its opening in 1934. This makes for an interesting parallel as the lyrics of the song could apply in the 1930's the same way they apply today, the people have changed but the venue has remained the same.

Jeff Buckley – What Will You Say Lyrics 19 years ago
For those of you who don't know Buckley was raised by his mother and his stepfather and met his father only once before his death in 1975 of a drugs overdose. "What will you say when you've seen my face" the words of this song speak for themselves.

Starsailor – Way To Fall Lyrics 19 years ago
MGS3 designer Hideo Kojima revealed in his blog that he originally wanted to use "Space Oddity" and "Ashes to Ashes" (by David Bowie) for the ending themes because of the space development theme of the game, but during the game's development that theme lost its significance. One of his colleagues then advised him to listen to stellastarr*, but Kojima heard "Starsailor." He liked the song "Way To Fall" and chose it as an ending theme.

Jeff Buckley – Lover, You Should've Come Over Lyrics 19 years ago
This song deals with the loneliness which comes from knowing you had something perfect but screwing it up and ending up alone with nothing but regret. My favourite part is the "It's never over" and especially "all my blood for the sweetness of her laughter" such a perfect line.

Guillemots – Little Bear Lyrics 19 years ago
No comments? I think this is a beautiful opening to the album. There is something lullaby-like about it, its a song you should listen to at night.

Bob Dylan – Like a Rolling Stone Lyrics 19 years ago
I can only imagine how fresh, how revolutionary, how totally fucking awesome this song sounded in 1965. As far as i'm concerned it is still today unrivalled as a peice of art

Guillemots – Trains to Brazil Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't know the full story and they probobly didn't change the lyrics as a result of the shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes however every time I hear the line...

"And I think about how long it will take them to blow us away
But I won't get me down "

Makes me think of the actions of the police involved in the shooting of that innocent man. It sort of says to me that they really aren't any better than the terrorists of 7/7.

Rufus Wainwright – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 19 years ago
Some great information and ideas have been posted about this song. I just wanted to add that the word Hallelujah is Hebrew and literally means Praise the Lord or Praise God, for most Christians it is considered the most joyful word of praise of all.

My favourite aspect of this song is how the word is used to convey the extremities of both the joy and the heartbreak of love. There are no words we have to explain how these situations feel but if there is one that comes close it's Hallelujah

Sigur Rós – Untitled 1 Lyrics 19 years ago
I totally agree with what d krez said. This song seems very sombre at the beginning but as the song progresses it becomes lighter and more happy, so for me it is a song of hope, something so simple but yet they achieve something I don't think they would be able to with words. Truly a beautiful opening to a beautiful album.

Belle & Sebastian – I'm a Cuckoo Lyrics 19 years ago
Already been said but...

A cuckold (or cuck) is a married man with a sexually unfaithful wife. In current usage it sometimes refers to non-married couples as well, although the common and traditional meaning is a man who is a victim of his wife's adultery. "Cuckold" is derived from the Old French for the Cuckoo bird

Snow Patrol – Chasing Cars Lyrics 19 years ago
I love how the lyrics are purposefully oversimplified, the song has a very childlike feel to it. Most importantly its a love song that doesn't need to include the word love.... my favourite line is "Those three words, I said too much, but not enough"

Snow Patrol – Set the Fire to the Third Bar Lyrics 19 years ago
I've listened to this song so many times since I got the album, this is my interpretation of what its about.

The start of the song is quite simple, 2 people serperated by a great distance are thinking about each other. I love how the 2 voices sing exactly the same thing through the whole song. It shows how you can be far away from someone but still be connected emotionally.

The person goes into a bar in order to try and stop feeling so lonely however it fails to work "Ghosts with just voices"

He/she then starts to imagine what it would be like if they were to meet each other again. I love where it comes in the album, right after "Make this go on for ever" and how it is almost the antithesis of it emotionally.

Snow Patrol – Make This Go On Forever Lyrics 19 years ago
Truly beautiful but sad song, the singer is explaining his feelings just after a breakup. Lines such as "I can't be as sorry as you think I should" show how he feels dejected as though hes just had a huge arguement and its obvious he knows that he is in the wrong.

I love how the chorus sounds like a march, it makes it sound more hopeful especially the line "The final word in the final sentence you ever uttered to me was love" To me it seems as if his lover might have said something along the lines of "I can't love you any more" but all he heard was the word "love"

The way the song ends is so apt in explaining how we feel after we've finally given up hope that the relationship will ever work again.
