I know the line "Look at those cavemen go", is also in a song from like the 50s or something called 'Alley oop'. The song was based on an old comic strip with same name that was about a group of cavemen. Just thought I'd add that in. |

Let me first say this has to be my favorite Bob Dylan song. I love every part of it, the lyrics, how he sings it and the music(the drum intro rocks!) But back to the meaning. AHEM... This song is about the devil. In the first stanza it mentions idols, which are the work of the devil. Then he refers to snakes in both fists, i think just making a connection to the ancient myths in each hand (hercules or minoan snake goddess.) This is to relate the connection of satan to snakes. In second stanza, i believe it makes a reference to the jewish teaching of something like rising up and saying goodbye to the sabbath. Since Satan has none of these morals he can say goodbye to no one. Or dylan could simply be saying that Satan gets up at night to do his dirty work and since everyones asleep has no one to say goodbye to. Then he once more relates him too a snake and says hes "keeping one step ahead" of any strand of inner conviction. In the third stanza Dylan says "You're a man of the mountains, you can walk on the clouds." He could possibly refering to where in the bible the apostle Paul designates Satan as “the ruler of the kingdom of the air”(Ephesians 2:2.) At the end of the satanza, he could be refering to the parable of the rich man in hell. Next stanza he says that satan only abides by only Old Testement legalism and the law of the jungle offering no pity. Then he says how the devil can apear as heroic as the grandest michelangelo statue yet also can apear as harmless as a guy resting in a field with a dog licking him. In the fifth stanza he shows that satan is behind riots and corrupted judges. In the final stanza, he starts saying how he will corrupt priests, rescue homless children only to place them in the hands of prostitutes. Then he closes by saying by saying that satan knows the hearts of men, yet wont give them what they need. I love this song! |
