AFI – Love Like Winter Lyrics 19 years ago
I love this song, but I can see why it pisses people off-
this is decidedly the most un-AFI song AFI has ever done. It doesn't sound like anything they've ever recorded before. Oh, well. It's still really good. ^-^

AFI – The Interview Lyrics 19 years ago
You know what this song means?
Vampires.
Or does it mean that Davey's gay?
Wait! I know!
DAVEY'S A GAY VAMPIRE.
There you go. Open and shut!
......hahaha. Just Kidding. I love the people who think all AFI songs are about either mythological bloodsuckers or homosexuality, and the ones who think that Davey is going to indicate his sexual preferences in a song. They make me chuckle.
Anyway, I really like this song, it reminds me of a recurring daydream I have, where I'm swimming underwater and having no trouble breathing. I know I draw a personal connection between swimming and escape from the rest of the world, but that might just be me projecting myself into Mr. Marchiand's beautiful lyrics. Basically, I think this IS a more direct message from DXH("for a change, i'll refrain from hiding all of me from you"), but he's still being as ambiguous as ever. The mood of the song is pessimistic, and it sounds like Davey is talking about a complete loss of hope or happiness, but then Jade cuts in and tells him to "Calm down, come down, cold resides with me". Whether this actually is supposed to be representitive of Jade Puget or not (I think it is), the result is that Jade saves Davey, and restores his hope by fleeing with him to "decemberunderground". December Underground is the only thing I really can't translate. I guess, in true AFI fashion, it means whatever you want it to mean. It has been said, by Davey, that decemberunderground is a time and a place. From this, I launch into my own interpretation, which is totally subjective, and has it's only basis in my opinion, as well as my interpretation of the rest of the song. Just to recount, I think the song is about Davey Havok, the Person, feeling hopeless and lost and doomed, and I believe that when Jade's vocals come in, it is representitive of Jade Puget, the person, coming into Davey's life and chilling him out. Therefore, I honestly believe that "decemberunderground" symbolizes the time spent writing songs for an album, in my opinion, Sing the Sorrow, although it might also be Black Sails, or Art of Drowning. Davey and Jade flee into the procedure of writing songs, and Davey has clicked creatively with Jade so thouroughly that, for the first time, he can actually express himself, instead of just being Punk-Rock. Listen to Very Proud of Ya, then move forward, listening in order to Black Sails, Art of Drowning, Sing the Sorrow, and finally, decemberunderground. Each album gets progressively more meaningful, with deeper lyrics and more complex melodies. Jade, I believe, freed Davey from having to hold back everything he wanted to say, so I believe these lyrics are a tribute to him.

PS- No, I do not think Davey and Jade are gay for each other. Grow the fuck up. Two people can be intimately tied to one another without fucking one another, or being romantically attached at all, believe it or not. Jeez.

AFI – Prelude 12/21 Lyrics 19 years ago
I freaking love the new-school hip-hop beat in this. Also, the lyrical structure and repeating melody in a minor key give it this haunting, solemn, ancient-sounding quality that remind me of really old Appalachian folk songs, plus the Gregorian chanting, which is even more ancient. The very, very old meets the very very new. I'm eating it up with a spoon and a fork.
Oh, and I totally agree with whoever said that this is a Direct Message from Davey (along with "The Interview"). I think this might be kind of a Bitter, angry message to the old fans who have turned their backs on them in light of the new sound.
"This is what I brought you, this you can keep/ This is what I brought, you may forget me."
I take this to mean that AFI has given us music that they have put everything into, and it's all they have to give, but still, it is what it is, and we can "keep" it or "forget" it.
"I promise you my heart, just promise to sing"
When Davey writes, he writes from his heart, and here he's saying that his songs ARE his heart, the epitome of his very being (a lot of poets or songwriters, myself included, feel that way). He will give you the songs, the music, his very soul, just promise to sing those songs, and emerse yourself in those words.
Now for the actual implications toward the Fan "betrayals", if you will:
"I promise to depart, just promise one thing/Kiss my eyes and lay me to sleep"
This says: "to the fans who don't like the new sound, and who want to abandon the band, we won't hold it against you, you don't have to listen anymore, but just keep us somewhere in your heart, and don't disrespect the Band."
....Yeah, I know that's a little deep, but that's what I get out of it. So sue me. Moving on.
"This is what I thought, I thought you'd need me/ This is what I thought, so think me naive/ I promised you a heart you promised to keep/ Kiss my eyes and Lay me to sleep."
These are (not that you asked) my favorite lyrics from the song, and the most clear cut shot at those who have abandoned the Band, and now gallavant around the Internet saying things like "AFI sold out" or "AFI were better when they were punk" or "Davey went gay and that's why they Suck now" or "More like A Faggot Inside."
Line by Line breakdown:
"I thought you'd need me... so think me naive".
Davey is quoted as saying, "Don't let anyone, even your parents, break you. Find good people who care about you and surround yourself with just them. If you can't find them at first, find good music and fall into it, let it hold you until they come." This implys to me that dXh views music as a catharsis, as something that people need to keep themselves sane and whole, and that he viewed the fans as "needing" AFI and their music. In light of "old-school fans" having such a quick, violent shift in opinion toward the band, such romantic thoughts about AFI fans as a whole might be overly optimistic, or even "naive". Whether it is or not, Davey still feels betrayed, because he promised all who would listen to his music, from the Dork 7" to DecemberUnderground, From "Two of a Kind" to "Endlessly, She Said", his HEART, which they promised to Keep, and not abandon once he grew up and wrote something more complex then "I Wanna Get a Mohawk".
...Not that there's anything necessarily wrong with the really old AFI stuff either. I love that shit. The difference lies between young, angry-at-the-world AFI and grown-up, introspective, why-am-I-here AFI. If you like new AFI, you should go listen to their old stuff, just to get a background on where they came from. Plus you'll probably end up liking Answer That as much as you like Sing the Sorrow. If you're an older fan and you don't like the new sound, please don't start ripping on the Band. Bands change sometimes, and Punks grow up. So why do we have to bring ignorant comments into it? I swear, if I hear one more khaki-short wearing, Bald Headed Metal-loving Mall-Punk say something about "A Fag Inside", I'm going to lay THEM to sleep, if you catch my drift.
Thanks for reading.

Count.
You're a motherfucking bigot.
There. See that "c", in the word "Fucking"?
If you're gonna say the word, SAY it, you festering hemmoroid.
Furthermore, I read a recent interview with Davey where this song (more specifically the "He bit my lip" line) was brought up and he explained that the he/she thing was just there to identify two seperate relationships, instead of saying "she" twice.
...homophobic much?

Maybe you need to explore your own sexuality?
"Methinks The lady doth protest too much."

AFI – Dancing Through Sunday Lyrics 19 years ago
Ah, god. Gotta love this song, the lyrics are really explicit, and a gorgeous use of the english language, but I think the ultimate point is, "Yes, life is hard. Yes, We are miserable. Yes, everything is pointless. Everything sucks.

......Fuck it, let's dance anyway."
Oh and you gotta love the whole steady rhythm going through out, then the slowing-down build-up in the bridge, and as soon as Davey goes "Ungh", BAM, Jade has a total spaz fit all over the fingerboard. Fucking core.

AFI – The Killing Lights Lyrics 19 years ago
Personally, I think it's a little chunk of Straight-Edge commentary, about the whole scene of being in the City and hitting clubs, doing drugs/ drinking, and randomly hooking up. "The killing lights" are a euphemism for the club, what with the strobe lights and such, and "5 am on the bathroom floor, from the night before, do you find me dreadful?" is a pretty obvious implication about a hangover, or some Afterglow. "Such a shame, such a sad disgrace, such a pretty face, but she's not regretful" is about a beautiful girl who's throwing her life away, but she doesn't care, because it's fun. "Am I beautiful? Am I usable?" seems to imply the various hooking-up done on a night out- this beautiful girl giving herself away for nothing. "Three AM on a City Street"- after the clubs close, "Where the air is sweet, and I've had my mouthful"- in the fresh air, she's done for the night, "but it seems that outside the screen", or once she is too old, or whatever, to party anymore, "such a pretty face often will look dreadul". The "Cut you up" bit, i think is either a reference to a hangover, and the immediate downside to partying too hard, or (I like this one better) he's talking about an Autopsy, cutting up the body of a Clubber who OD'd or otherwise got killed in a manner relative to substance abuse.

.....xXx.

AFI – Love Like Winter Lyrics 19 years ago
The only conclusion I can come to is that it's about the wake of a passionate love affair, an affair so strong that, once over, nothing can ever compare to it again. The speaker (whether it is, in fact, Davey or not, I'll still refer to him as davey because it makes things simpler)fell in love with a man ("he bit my lip and drank my warmth from years before") and, eventually, the two lovers separated, breaking "Davey's" heart. The Second verse details another relationship of Davey's, long after the first has passed. Still, Davey doesn't feel any attachment to this woman ("I barely dreamt her yesterday"). Whether "Por Siempre" ("For Always") is Actually written on the mirror or not (I see it as figurative, like "the writing on the wall"), it's clear that this girl is smart enough to realize she can never live up to Davey's expectations, because she will never be "him", and Davey is devoted to him "For Always".("She said, "It seems you're somewhere far away, to his face"). Davey is left heartbroken again- he also has come to realize that, without "him", Davey cannot love. Hence, the first lines are about warning potential lovers not to get attached to him ("Warn your warmth to turn away. Here it's December everyday.")- Davey will only dissapoint. ("Press your lips to the
sculptures [Davey, like a statue since his heartbreak] and surely you'll stay/ for of sugar[attractive to others, but...] and ice [cold in "his" absence], I am made.")
Well, there's my first post. Ha. and a ridiculously long and really subjective post it is.
