Paul Simon explained this song. Each verse is about Paul Simon. The first verse begins with a joke but moves to him being scared with lots of scary images. Scared that he's no longer relevant in the music world. Just scared. In the chorus he asks us to make a pledge to cover each others back. You can call him Al. He'll call you Betty. Second verse: "Short little span of attention" is a penis joke and he continues to lament his broken family - "where is my wife and family". Third verse he's now in Africa, a stranger, walking the streets. Yet he sees it as an awakening, an inspiration. Its exactly what was going on in his life. |
