since i last wrote that interpretation i've grown and i see so much in that song now the line about how he came from the womb. the place i was born is a parallel soooo endearing!!! this man as a little boy came from the womb and momma was the comfort to all his anxiouty and as a man he was welcomed again to the womb (catch my drift)and once again found great peace for all his adult anxiouties and now that he is without a woman in his life he writes: most days i spend like a child whose afraid of ghosts in the night now that i am grown i know there ain't nothing out there but im still afraid to turn on the light... he is realizing without her he is in need. and so are we without our men and i also think now being older he wakes up sometimes in the night with a memory of an intimate adult experience and has a little relief from his present situation in the memory ]angie |

well here's my interpretation "not subtle or on the list" this baby wasn't planned and his or her prescence shook the heck outta his life that line..."ashes of another life" point to the end of the child's life cuz all he has left now is to swim through the ashes of it i think maybe he impregnated a woman who fended the babies life and now he hurts so bad he wants to die he feels responsible "In these times of doing what you're told" i think she was told she had to have an abortion... the message to the unborn child "wrapped up tight" in mommas belly is "live while you can cuz you won't long" wrapped in guilt is the womb cuz she felt guilty about the pregnancy and people are accusing him of pressuring her to do it but "no one knows what i believe" i like the line "no real reason to accept the way things have changed" ha it could be sarcastic...like their wasn't any real reason to have the baby...i mean "im staring down the barrel of a 45 i think that she probably used that as her excuse to rationalize the end of the child..."there is no real reason" he says to the baby In a box high up on the shelf, left for you, no one else There's a piece of a puzzle known as life he told the baby that he had a piece of this stuff we call life and that the life the baby had was his and no one else's... that means...it wasn't hers or his to take away! i love the song |

To me this is a powerfully moving song...brought me to tears...it pays sweet tribute to the enveloping love of a woman..in the best way possible! from the heart of a man!! he has both experienced it and mourns...and so i do with him! he once knew that warm intimate love. what i like is that amos fully understands the truth that it's not mothering- that essence that he refers to about being afraid at night it's womanly!!! women show compassionate love because they are women not because they are mothers he used to know that intimate place of a woman's body and heart..and now "most of my days are spent alone" "1000 miles from the place he was born= a womb= not just physically but also...in the video he is an older middle age man who by his expressions doesn't feel he merits that love anymore. but when she wakes me! is like we wake from our present to our past in memories and when she wakes him she takes him back to the love he once knew... it is a masterpiece of a song to me! the sound of his voice at the end even sounds nostalgic like hm hm hmm i remember beautiful |
