| Tool – Aenema Lyrics | 19 years ago |

I haven't gone through all of the comments, so I apologize if this has been said before~ As with several songs by Maynard, this one uses Biblical references to point out current problems and trends. In the beginning of these comments, it was said that this was apocalyptic. Yes, in ways, but it is paralleling Genesis with the Great Flood. God saw how awful the humans had become, so he decided to "wash it all away," only in this song it is "mother," which I think is refering to Mother earth. Because of humanity's raping of nature, she is going to heal herself, but the only way to do that is to get rid of the problem. The reason I absolutely love this song is the irreverant mantra "learn to swim"- as though that would help any- Maynard has quite the knack for combining bitter irony with angst. |

I think the song can be seen in many different lights- the one that I am recently fond of is that it is an internal monologue with himself. With the first part commiting himself basically to death, the part of himself that remains strong is arguing with the part that is succumbing to illness. I get a great mental image of a person in a hospital bed on life support- he's unconscious but in some sort of out-of-body way he is yelling at himself not to just go gently. While I was disappointed in parts of the movie I must admit that this song was a highlight to the film- |

I am one of the people that actually likes this song- It is my favorite off of the album, actually- I agree with the idea that it is a mental patient and the delusional world he is spinning around himself- In the white-walled world he lives in, he has somehow managed to make a part of his world soft and gentle, to lessen the darkness o mental illness and put a pretty glow on it- The music itself makes me feel like dying, but in a beautiful way. |

| David Byrne – Glass, Concrete & Stone Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I really like the 'to lie fully' thing, sensemakesnothing. I love David Byrne- there are so man layers to his songs. This song makes me feel like crying, reminds how empty life can leave a person feeling- "it is just a house, not a home' is one of the most telling lines I can think of- How everything we think is strong and secure is actually just 'glass, concrete and stone'- none of it means anything, only how people interact with their environments and eachother. "Let my body and soul be my guide' is a great way to end it. Gods I love DB~ | |
| Bush – Machinehead Lyrics | 19 years ago |

These are some great suggestions as to what this song is about- I especially like the warring ego idea. Definitely makes sense. For me, though, I think this song is a metaphor for sex. I could be totally off, but the 'breath in, breathe out' part mimics heavy breathing- The words he uses all have sexual connotations: 'finger's gotta feel' 'felt you like electric light' (the blinding flash of orgasm), machinehead... I won't describe that one- and 'green to red' is like 'crimson and clover' which used to be a sexual reference. I can also see how this is a car metaphor for aging in general. Racing away from growing old, clinging to youth through activities like fast cars- |
