| It is interesting to see people try to tie this to one thing or one time. Of course it is all valid. It can apply to any inexorable and unacknowledged truth. | |

@[shawn11553:31056] I can understand that thought since it as relevant as it ever was. Timeless. |

The lines "Cause I'm just a problem for you to solve..." and "I don't have that much ego to spend" make me have a different impression some of the other commenters. There's definitely at least a fear that she'll dealing with someone who's going to try to fix her. No one wants to feel that way. That said their are a lot of layers here and fascinating word choices. There's some legal double meanings like "your honor" and "waver/waiver" and possibly even "object to". I think deathly could be a reference to the "La petite mort" or "the little death"; "climb aboard" and "get out the gun" have sexual connotations as well. I think she's placing herself in the position of judge which makes the "you're on your honor" have a few different meanings. If she should waver/waiver and take the risk, I don't think I should have to explain what "the gun" is. |

| Clearly "got up" is a reference to getting high. I think this is a song about getting high with a troubled drug addicted woman. He's trying to help her and comfort her but is probably just helping her harm herself and go down a path that will eventually kill her, not knowing right from wrong. | |

To me the song is about getting away from a relationship that's toxic. The narrator is not running away from her feelings, but rather taking an honest account of her feelings and what she has learned. Empowered by this she puts an end to things ("hold the gun") and break her own heart instead of letting someone to continue to break hers. By putting an end to a relationship that is hurting both people she is showing more love than than staying in it. "I love you more" in part means she loves him more that he loves her. "loving him like a winter bird" i think means that she stayed even after things got too "cold" and should have left for a warmer climate and built what she really wanted. Of course, poetry can be interpreted several different way. |

| Dar Williams – After All Lyrics | 19 years ago |

This song is about recovering from major depression. About trying to fight the chaos of life by trying to control things and isolating from life. I think "I chose to live" has double meaning. It is recognizing the selfishness in suicide, but I think it also means choosing to recover and live life fully. The family stuff is a lot about how you inherit your ways of thinking from your parents. Although parents try to protect you from the pain they have had in their life, they still teach you coping mechanisms that may not all be positive. It's important to understand them in understanding yourself. "Children of the war" has double meaning. Her parents were probably literally children during WWII, but it also refers to "the war inside", battling emotional issues like anxiety and depression. It ends with a very positive message that its important to experience life, take some chances. There will be disappointments, but it'll be worth it. Embrace the chaos of life. |
