This song's not sad at all. I hate it when people fail to see the obvious. Most of radiohead's songs are happy songs. Like this one.
Most people are so conditioned to hear Thom sing of desperation and sadness that they can't see the obvious. Read the lyrics, it's about serenity, peace of mind, relaxation, letting go. It's about hope, not hopelesness. |

i think (or maybe because that's what happened to me recently) it's about a guy who had a one night stand with a girl, they both chicken out and say they should ignore what happened that night instead of starting a relationship, and he is expressing his true feelings through this song.

Paranoid Android, the first single from 'Ok Computer' was a complicated affair, not least because of the three disparate yet cohesive sections. It had been inspired by a bad experience Thom had one night in a Los Angeles bar. He had gone there for a quiet drink, but found himself surrounded by parasitic groupie types and pretentious California posers. Unbeknown to him, virtually everyone in the room, except himself, was on cocaine. Thom: "The people I saw that night were just like demons from another planet. Everyone was trying to get something out of me. I felt like my own self was collapsing in the presence of it, but I also felt completely, utterly part of it, like it was all going to some crashing down any minute.' The band had been playing the song for months in rehearsals, but that night, while he couldn't sleep, the lyrics flooded into Thom's head at 5am. Of particular horror to him was one especially vicious lady who had a drink spilt over her dress and whose face contorted in venom at the culprit - she was the 'kicking, squealing Gucci little piggy' that Thom sang of and he was horrified. Thom: "Basically it's just abou chaos, chaos, utter fucking chaos."

Obviously, everyone who tries to fit this song into one absolute concept doesn't know the first thing about tool lyrics: they're always multi-leveled.
Try interpreting tool songs as universally as you can. For exemple, I believe that this song is not about drugs, not about love but about the lack of satisfaction in general. It's a part of being human. We can never be satisfied. There are always higher goals, always a next step, always the choice of getting better kicks from different things. But here's the catch: with dissatisfaction, there exists exaggeration. And this is all that the song is trying to tell. Fisting is a great exemple for this, it might be ok to finger a girl, but it's absolutely not ok to put your arm through her vagina. But there's always a time when you want to put that arm through when you can't get the kick you used to get by just fingering her. |

I don't think there's another man. The lyrics "taking solace in the words i so despise", i believe, refers to his wife being comforted by others who say that she has to move on, that she has to go on with her own life now. Finally, she decides that they're right and she moves on, but he can't, so the stuff in demon of the fall happen. Later, in credence, he also says "your laughter weeps the truth", this clears the fact that she has moved on and laughs again, even though the man she loved is now dead so he decides to face eternity alone. |

I think this song's about the businessmen we see everyday on streets with their gucci suits and their ties... Each one of them in great dreams of grandeur, spending their eveyday-lives going to work and then back home. This has become so systematic that they're no different than an android. Their dreams of grandeur and great expectations have made them paranoid. Hence, these people with no names, no faces form a society of paranoid androids. I think in the slow part Thom is describing a day in the market and what a chaotic environment it is: "the yuppies networking... the panic, the vomit..."
All in all I think the android is not actually an android, but the androids that we became pursuing our dreams of one day becoming the king, the greatest, whatever... |
