Ok I think half of you are being shortsighted and half of you are reading WAAAAAAAAY too much into this. Lexington is definitely the closest. I'll buy the suggestion that its written partly about being away from home. I think its pretty clearly about a guy who is looking around at other girls and acknowledging his body's urges, but mentally wants to stay true to his girl. If you want to read too much into it, how about the fact that the music (2 overlapping themes) reflects his opposing urges? And yes, in the end he deals with it by beatin' it. |

| I've been through dozens of possible variations of meanings on this song, and all but one are obvious. My friend once posed an alternate possibility: that this song is about a soldier in the Vietnam War and a Vietnamese prostitute. If you take a look at the lyrics, this makes sense for most of the verses, and certainly the overall feel of the song in its original recording on Blood on the Tracks. What do you all think? | |
