Jay-Z – Empire State of Mind Lyrics 14 years ago
Listen to Alicia Keys vocal in the chorus versus Rihanna in 'Run This Town', there is no comparison - a classicly trained articulate professional versus someone who butchers the English language in every interview I've ever heard from her. Don't get me wrong, Alicia Keys lacks the "street cred" to bring that needed dynamic to 'Run This Town', something Rhianna is better suited for; but hearing someone is among the best at what she does bring it like Alicia does in 'Empire State of Mind' is incredible to hear! This track alone makes the album worth purchasing (plus the subject matter is spot on too - New York is where it's at!).

Tim McGraw – Let It Go Lyrics 15 years ago
This song would definitely go on the mix tape (playlist) of a motivational mix for when you're feeling beaten. I found this passage from 'The 5 People You Meet in Heaven': ‘All parents damage their children. It cannot be helped. Youth, like pristine glass, absorbs the prints of its handlers. Some parents smudge, others crack, a few shatter childhoods completely into jagged little pieces, beyond repair.’

You carry those pieces around long enough and you're not ever going to heal. Tim's song is probably the Country equivalent of Third Eye Blind's "Jumper" (it would be the lead-off song on the mix tape; also add Collective Soul's 'The World I Know'); here's the only part you really need to remember: 'Well everyone I know has got a reason...maybe today, We can put the past away'.

Buddy Jewell – Sweet Southern Comfort Lyrics 15 years ago
Technically, 'amymonkey', it also omits Florida, Kentucky, and Missouri too (though the latter never "officially" left the Union); but you're right, the omission of the Commonwealth of Virginia is a terrible oversight. He barely squeezes in Tennessee with the "Blessed Graceland" line (because everyone in Dixie knows it's "blessed" 'cause it's Jesus' house when Elvis isn't staying there). Short of that it's a great anthem to the South Land!

Gary Allan – Promise Broken Lyrics 16 years ago
This may be in the top 3 of the most simple, yet poignant Country songs ever written. Simple words, you don't need a dictionary like a Police song, or a classical piece of literature like something Iron Maiden might have written. But heavy none-the-less. A great song from a greatly underrated album.

By-the-way, the two ahead of it:

George Jones 'He Stopped Loving Her Today' and Montgomery Gentry's 'Cold One Coming On'; the latter containing the most brief, to-the-point Country lyric ever written; the "Jesus Wept" equivalent of a Country music Bible...

"Makes you want to start thinking, about drinking"; that is every Country song ever written boiled down to its core.

Today this one is for Anna Nicole Smith. I read this quote about her this morning:

"With Anna Nicole, she was pathetic but at the same time you thought, 'Gosh, if I could just scoop you up and fix things, it would be OK,'" said Jerry Herron, a professor of American culture at Wayne State University.

The irony of the 'hotel room' lyric doesn't escape me either. Maybe she'll finally have the peace that eluded her, her whole life.

(alexvega asked: It does sound familiar, but I can't put my finger on what it is....)

I hear a greatly slowed down version of "Gonna' Fly Now" from the 'Rocky' movies. It's not credited as having sampled that, but listen closely and tell me if it's what you hear too.

Evanescence – My Immortal Lyrics 17 years ago
If there’s a more perfect melancholy, sounds-good-to-be-sad song than this one, then I’ve never heard it. It’s perfect! Amy Lee’s perfect! She’s way better than the rest of this band – like Tommy Lee to Motley Crue, or Flea to the Chili Peppers or Edward to Van Halen, too much talent wasted on less talented band mates. (Damn, I’ve just put together a super group – Amy on vocals and keyboards, Tommy on drums, Flea on bass and Eddie on guitar. Factor out that they’re 4 different sounds, and you’ve got the best band ever?)

That's maybe the dumbest thing I've ever read on here! He was born in 1882, moron; he lived to be 63 despite being afflicted with Guillain-Barré syndrome. You write as though he was supposed to be immortal and was struck down by a truck or something.

If we're listing too-bad-to-die figures in history, can I add George Washington, Ronald Reagan and Elvis to the list? Stupid!

Tim McGraw – My Old Friend Lyrics 18 years ago
Maybe I’m feeling melancholy, or it’s too little sleep, but I keep playing this song over and over and thinking of my Dad. Like I’ve read about Tim and his Father not being especially close, neither were we. I was sure that when he was gone I’d be free of all the heavy trips and disagreements about my decisions – I was wrong. If there’s anything to take from this song, it’s that regret is bitter medicine.

This is a beautiful song, regardless of your persuasion. Anyone could feel it holding the one they love close, maybe swaying to the gentle rhythms of this tune. Want to set a mood? Make an old-fashioned mix tape with this song, 'Enough Of Me', 'Nowhere To Go' & 'You Can Sleep While I Drive' and waste the evening away embraced together.

Neil Young – Southern Man Lyrics 18 years ago
The best comment ever came directly from Lynyrd Skynyrd's Gary Rossington, "We were recording this album down here, and noticed when we drove around how beautiful it was; and then we hear this Neil Young song on the radio putting it down. What the hell does he know about it anyway; he's from Canada". So there; and the same goes for all of Neil Young's protest songs against our Government and President too. If it's so bad go the hell back to Canada and shut-up! But leave the American dollars you've made behind. And quit protesting the 'War for Oil'; I suppose his big tour buses require no gas or oil to operate? Hypocrite!

Pat Benatar – Hit Me with Your Best Shot Lyrics 18 years ago
The lyrics are a little cheesy, and when this song was first released I was in 7th grade and was somewhat confused as I'd only begun to hear about things like S&M. Obviously this song isn't about that at all. But forget the words and the meaning, and listen to that guitar. Neil ‘Spyder’ Giraldo, Pat's husband, is way underrated as a guitar player! Granted this solo is no Eddie Van Halen trick instrumental, but listen to how many different sounds he crams into a 30 second lead break. Plus he's a really nice guy and has been faithfully married over 20 years. They get a strong C for lyrical content, but an A for musicianship. Next time it's on the radio don't be so quick to turn the dial; it's less than 3 minutes of your time, and if you open your mind and ears you'll hear some really great guitar work!
