Why this song doesn't have hundreds of comments on it is beyond me. Things We Lost in the Fire is amazing and this song is the highlight of the album.
As for what this song is about, I know Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk were having a baby around the time this album was made. I always took the song to be about having to deal with general depression of life and having this child that truly makes up happy and that s/he is going to be growing up and leaving so fast that you want to hold on to you child forever. |

Hitting on the irony of death personified to an individual versus the activity that person was doing, the song is about how we feel bad for the people who die engaged in the very activities that are killing everyone on a slower, more global scale. Adding to the irony is we feel bad for these people briefly and then it drifts away yet what they were doing is killing everyone and we can't figure out why we're all getting harmed. |

After hearing this, I thought it was about about a young man who is trying to assure himself that everything is going to be fine as his lover leaves him for good. Also, it appears that the young man dresses as a woman. It sounds like the lover did everything for this man but it started to come apart when the man said "I love you" to the lover. Also, I get the feeling that the young man didn't want to live as woman anymore and that upset the lover as well. |

I assumed the song was someone basically trying not to appear freaked out that the person they are talking to has admitted to raping someone else and seems pretty remorsely about it. (No remorse from "deep lack of guilt", a rape took place from "a duped bridal hole," "booyhood slipping in blood.")
The person "speaking" in the song is telling the other person advice ("keep it to yourself") and agreeing with them just to shut them up ("I know she was that you've had"). |
