Patti Smith – Land: Horses/Land of a Thousand Dances/La Mer(de) Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is amazing. I thought I knew what it was about for the longest time, but I just watched her Old Grey Whistle Test performance and I finally think I understand this fucking cryptic (but AMAZING) song. I'm just about certain it's about someone's first gay encounter, and all the social "responsibility" that comes with coming out. Now I just listen to the song with that in mind and all the lyrics make sense. If you have doubts, the test's on YouTube. It's titled: Patti Smith "Horses". I'm amazed at how cryptic this song's meaning is. Patti Smith is a rock and roll deity.

Espers – Dead King Lyrics 18 years ago
I can't believe I'm the first to comment on this song! Espers is my favorite contemporary band, but this song just totally blew me away. Acid folk at its best. I've never heard a "bad trip" song quite like this before.

It starts of pretty normal, at least for this band, but between the 3 and 4 minute mark it gets absolutely insane. Probably the best organized chaos of any studio album I've heard. And what IS that instrument that starts around 6:20 and is one of the last to tapper off? It sounds like...I dunno, a distorted BAGPIPE or something (????). The instrumental second half is by far my favorite part, but the lyrics are typical of espers: vague and archaic, almost poetry.

Arcade Fire – Black Mirror Lyrics 19 years ago
Well, that's a pretty cool reference about the black mirror and just that you'd actually think of it, but I doubt it's talking about the art technique because it actually says "black mirror knows no reflection". But since a really large amount of their songs are about death, maybe the black mirror is the uncertainty about death - when it's coming and what happens after? Either way, this song is incredible and frankly pretty scary, haha. Lots and lots of apocalyptic songs on neon bible...

Arcade Fire – Black Wave/Bad Vibrations Lyrics 19 years ago
For some reason, I think this is my favorite song on Neon Bible, but Black Mirror's pretty close. I've always had a solid impression that this song's talking about the end of the world from climate change (weird, huh? It's probably just me...). I'd say it's definitely about death: the first part about the denial of it (all the talk about forgetting) and the second part about realizing that it can't be escaped. The line "the shadows they fear the sun" makes me think about the fear of returning to lifeless matter (shadows are created by the sun).
The thing that made me think it was about climate change was when Win starts basically pleading "stop now before it's too late". It might all just be about humanity causing its downfall in general, but all the references to waves and the sea made me think it's more specific. But then the sea's thought of as a safe haven in the first part, so I'm not really sure about it at all. Blah, I listen to this song way too much...

Pink Floyd – Any Colour You Like Lyrics 19 years ago
A lot of people seem to think it's more about drugs, but I dunno. The title makes it seem more like it's about fate to me. Since the album's about what can push people toward insanity, it's probably about being predestined, genetically or just by fate in general. Kind of like the Henry Ford quote "any color...so long as it's black". So I guess to me it's more like everyone doesn't have a choice and they all go insane on some level before they die. Free will might just be an illusion we keep to save our sanity. Also might have something to do with Syd Barret's insanity, which was partially because of drugs so maybe it's about drug use on some level too.
