Billie Holiday – Strange Fruit Lyrics 19 years ago
I first heard the song when Siouxsie & The Banshees brought it out. My initial impression was rather psychedelicly weird (and this is what Siouxsie is all about!) I picture this really sombre and dark scene (much like 'The Scream' by Edvard Munch) with these dark clouds looming above this barren tree in the middle of an open field and the tree bore this really psychedelic-looking fruit that was all rotten and sort of evolutionary in that it was produced by the life-giving 'blood' that it was feeding off, but the whole scene is really gloomy and dark with hidden pictures of apparitions mixed with nostalgia. When I saw a documentary on the racism in America, the Strange Fruit song was being sung in the background and was I really touched by it's true meaning. Just shows how a little imagination can either lead you astray or allow you to interpret a song in your own way.

Bauhaus – In The Flat Field Lyrics 19 years ago
To me, the song represents looking for adventure beyond the mundane, looking for something "bigger"- a higher high, a more amourous encounter. In the first verse, he describes his sexual loneliness that is unfulfilling, so he gets tired of jacking off every night, but acknowledges this incessant obsession to satisfy this sex hunger. In the second verse, he states that he is bored with his sexual affairs and needs something more exciting, so he says that anybody can sleep with a tart (whore), but explains that he's been there already, and that he is the man more worthy to experience sexual bliss. The last verse indicates that since he is bored with the flat field (flat field indicative of no excitement and boredom with what he has had and wants more) he needs more than the whores he can get from Picadilly Circus and with that, he tends to escape from it by getting high (his cerebral fix) so he can escape into a new fantasy world of surreal bliss.
This is a brilliant representation of the highest expectations one expects of themselves - Absolutely brilliant!
