When I was delivering pizzas in Austin around about 1995, an old homeless drifter came into our pizza joint and was hanging out talking to us in the kitchen. I happened to have Indigo Girls playing on the house sound system and this sound came on. Out of nowhere, this man turns to me all excited and says "This song is about me!! I met them!! They're gay you know." LOL I honestly cannot attest to the truth of his statement, but he did know lots of details about them, including the fact they they were touring in an old van. I kind of like to think that he was telling the truth... :) |

well, first off the lyrics on this page are wrong. Headlights in the rainy street I check, make sure it's not the heat I wink, I smile, I wave my hand He stops and seems to understand The small transaction we must make I tell him that my heart will break If he's not a generous man I step into his van "The small transaction we must make" should be "A smart transsexual we be" Suddenly the song is not very surprising. I actually like this song. Good structure (as is typical of Sting's songs) and nice imagry. |

wow, the fact that the meaning is not obvious really makes the song ring true. 25 years ago was the mid to late 60s (well, when the song was first released, that is). The US was in the midst of the Vietnam conflict and a strong civil rights movement. Hippies stood up and strongly promoted the liberal movement and crusaded for the rights of everyone. Now the hippie movement is nothing but a passing fashion. Most of the kids that partake of it are only in it for the fashion and cool-factor. They take the drugs, but know nothing about shamanism or elightenment or any of the cultural things that started the drug craze. they wear the bell bottoms and tied dyed shirts, but know nothing about riding in a bus on a road trip with 15 other people who haven't showered for a week. This song is a testimony to the past and call to all of us to wake up and either get with the program or take a walk on the sun. Cheers!! |
