Robbie Williams – Make Me Pure Lyrics 19 years ago
"Lord make me pure but not yet" is a prayer by St Augustine from his early student days.

Suzanne Vega – Rusted Pipe Lyrics 19 years ago
Its about writers' block -and a really great description too. Its knowing you want to say something but you can't quite think what it is and then "somewhere deep within, hear the creak tht lets the tale begin."

Suzanne Vega – Institution Green Lyrics 19 years ago
Abortion - I never thought of that but maybe.

I thought the song was literally about voting. It is about the alienation we feel when we go along to have "our say" about how society should be run. It is a lonely task, difficult because we never know the truth about what's happening anyway....

Actually I think abortion makes more sense -"cast my vote" is a reference to having a "choice" and wondering how much value there is in the choice - yeah actually I think you're rights mila.

Suzanne Vega – Ironbound/Fancy Poultry Lyrics 19 years ago
Description at the beginning is really beautiful and the scene is really woven around the main figure of the song, giving the impression that she really is grafted to the city, unable to detach. The chant of the poulty seller has even become her own voice and "wings are nearlly free" is a reference to how little her soul seems to matter in the city -but somehow there is a note of hope o perhaps it is ironic -that she will be nearlly free.

Franz Ferdinand – Take Me Out Lyrics 19 years ago
I don't think its whiny so much as ironic - Franz never had the chance to choose whether he wanted to live or die.

I think it is a quirky and original attempt at describing a kind of nexus/relationship between a killer and victim. Could also be a song about abortion.

Muse – Time Is Running Out Lyrics 19 years ago
Hi, I totally agree with the first interpretation -its certainly political and the "IT" is the truth.

A broken relationship also works with the lyrics - I guess that metaphor is the vehicle for the political comment.

But the abortion theory actually fits very neatly as well "You're something beautiful, a contradiction" -how chilling, the baby is talking to mother -lifegiver and murderer... It: life, truth, love?

Pink Floyd – High Hopes Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is about the ongoing internal conflict between pursing ideals or ambitions and looking back at the embers of bridges glowing (beautiful imagery) behind us or clinging to our childhood personas. He depicts the decision as lose/lose. If we never branch out then the "myriad small creatures" will "tie us to the ground" but if we chase our dreams we will be "encumbered forever by desire and ambition" -cheerful song!!

Coldplay – Spies Lyrics 19 years ago
Perhaps, like so many Coldplay songs, this is about guilt -about trying to tell right from wrong and grappling with feelings of confusion and regret: "Down here, where I cannot see so clear. I said what do I know? Show me the right way to go." The spies are our eyes of our souls as we try to judge ourselves objectively from the outside. Perhaps the last line in the song is the realisation that he needs to forgive himself. Just a thought -similar to Brigita's interpretation perhaps...

The Killers – Jenny Was a Friend of Mine Lyrics 19 years ago
The murder theme really works -especially when you consider it alongside mr brightside: "but she had somewhere to go...

But also it could be about a guy telling his girlfriend that he wasn't cheating on her "There aint no motive for this crime, Jenny was a FRIEND of mine." It actually works: He is trying to stop her screaming and being hysterical and saying things like "I know what your doing here." He is sick of being harassed about it "I swear I told you truth."

Well...if they are making a murder movie about this song then maybe the above doesn't apply but its crazy how one set of words could mean totally different things..

Loreena McKennitt – The Lady of Shalott Lyrics 19 years ago
Its clearly all about ambition and her inability to be happy with what she already has. She loses herself ("with a glassy countenance") to greed and ambition...She just wants to get to Camelot. Lancelot, more than anything symbolises a way to get there.

Alanis Morissette – Joining You Lyrics 19 years ago
Alanis has a such an amazing way of blending and weaving unlikely words together to express something totally original. This song is essentially about how people are ultimately more than their defects, mistakes or other "defining" characteristics. Its saying that because we can rise up above the labels people give us, then we don't need to be committing suicide like Alanis' friend's son/daughter.

The way she lists all the transitory moulds which threaten to characterise us, really make her message hit home.

She expresses the pain and the frustration of the person she's addressing through both the lyrics and the music, "and yes they're in shock, they are panicked you and your chronic, them and their drama, you this embarrassment us in the middle of this delusion." Its such a great description.

The song is also really warm in that Alanis seeks to identify with the subject of this song as a friend and equal despite the age difference and the fact that she is trying to impart some important truths.

I'd say this is her best song!!

Elisa – The Marriage Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is about discovering a moment where all the threads of life converge into a coherent truth and then trying to remember and maintain that peace and how it was attained: "I hope I don't forget these feelings fading off in time. Trapped behind my face, they are burning in my mind."
