No idea what this song meant to the writers, but this is what it means for me: It's a girl in an abusive relationship, or who's been abused. She's talking about herself, both in the third and first person. "I won’t stand in your way Let your hatred grow" ^she won't stop the person who's hurting her anymore, she's given up. "And she’ll scream And she’ll shout And she’ll pray" ^she struggles at first, but then only prays silently. "And she had a name Yeah, she had a name" ^she's not just a statistic. She's not just an object. "And I won’t hold you back Let your anger rise" ^again, she won't stop him. "And we’ll fly And we’ll fall And we’ll burn" (there's a mistake - it's WE'LL burn, not YOU'LL burn.) ^the relationship was good, at first, they were 'flying'. and then falling, and finally burning. "this is the last time I'll abandon you and this is the last time I'll forget you I wish I could" ^she wishes she could leave her abuser, or forget him. But she won't, and she can't. "and we'll love and we'll hope and we'll die all to no avail all to no avail" (again a mistake - there isn't 'yell' or 'hate'). ^again this describes how she detoriates. At first she loves, then she only hopes for it to be over, and finally dies. And finally the song ends with her wishing again she could leave him and forget him, but knowing she never will. |

...unrequited love. This song makes me bawl every time I hear it. "hopelessly I'll love you endlessly hopelessly I'll give you everything but I won't give you up I won't let you down and I won't leave you falling but the moment never comes" I would give her everything. And I would never forsake her, and I'd always love her. ...if she ever let me. |

| Muse – Thoughts of a Dying Atheist Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
As the title says, it's the thought of an atheist as he dies... and he's terrified that there's going to be nothing beyond death, that death is just the end and there's nothing afterwards: "and the end is all I can see" |

| Within Temptation – Memories Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| Going by the music video... it's a woman remembering her lover from her youth, who is long dead or gone, yet still lives on in her memories. | |
| Within Temptation – Overcome Lyrics | 19 years ago |
|
Sounds to me like a girl who was raped: "Memory still haunts me In the dead of night Over and over I felt so small" and that no one helped her as she cried for help, and how afterwards, everyone blamed her or tried to ignore what had happened: "Where are the heroes I my time of need Is my crying abandoned? Or have they gone Oh no They just tend to stand Out of the rain Thinking but not acting That they're not to blame" So she's angry at those who failed to help her, and those who aren't helping her now, but still she's not alone, there are others like her, and she'll overcome what she's been through, and get her revenge. |

This makes me think of a girl in an abusive relationship, who at first screams, shouts, and prays, then gradually loses herself and in part of the song, she's talking about that girl she used to be: "And she’ll scream And she’ll shout And she’ll pray And she had a name Yeah, she had a name" and how now she doesn't remember that girl anymore, that girl is gone and what remains is the victim in the stockholm syndrome. She talks about how the relationship is now - she won't hold him back as his anger rises, etc. She won't ever leave him or stop him or forget him, though she wishes she could, because she's too deep into the relationship. |
