Broken Social Scene – KC Accidental Lyrics 19 years ago
This is what they closed with when I saw them last summer. The girl I was with (who bought the tickets) was there for Ted Leo and Belle and Sebastian and had never even heard of Broken Social Scene but I thoroughly enjoyed it. If I remember right they opened with a rendition of Shampoo Suicide or a medley that involved it, I just remember parts of the song. I was too busy being ecstatic.

This song is gorgeous. I'm done gushing.

Sufjan Stevens – The Henney Buggy Band Lyrics 19 years ago
"I kissed you on the face
I kissed you on the playground"

Reminds me of elementary school every time I hear it.

I love this song!

Sufjan Stevens – Sister Lyrics 19 years ago
I agree with VividTangerine, though I personally like this song as a whole, intro and all, that without the beginning the end wouldn't be nearly as powerful. I get shivers every time i hear it cut out, leaving the guitar and (soon afterwards) his voice. Without the build I don't think there'd be shivers, just pondering on what the heck he means by a "fish stone."

Sufjan Stevens – Concerning the UFO Sighting Near Highland, Illinois Lyrics 19 years ago
Just another tie-in, I can definitely see the three stars being a Biblical reference but a more literal interpretation is that many of the "eye witness" accounts of the UFO in Highland mentioned that there were specifically three bright lights on the UFO. I actually did some research on the incident because of this song, it's very interesting and well documented, though in matters such as these one must be weary of internet information. As mentioned before, there apparently were a good number of cops who claimed to witness it as well. From what I remember there were at least two unrelated people (one was in this Lebanon place, the other, a cop, was i believe on a highway or something) who gave strikingly similar physical descriptions of the object.

Weird stuff.

Sufjan Stevens – Opie's Funeral Song Lyrics 19 years ago
Seasandskies, that first bit I take to just be an example of this person's kindness. He invited the narrator (Sufjan I'm supposing) to hang out, or something of the sort, and something as simple as that made such an impression and led to friendship.

As for the fire in the tree, my first impression was a biblical reference but that really doesn't match up with the rest of the song, unless the rest of the lyrics are incredibly vague metaphors for Jesus and what he "did for us." Which I entertain almost as a fancy of sorts but honestly doubt. Perhaps it's just one of those personal experiences that a songwriter puts in that only they truly understand.

That last big I'm not sure about either. I want to say there's significance in an upside down ribbon but I have nothing to back that up with. This is just a guess but the "party to be" gave me the impression that Opie died before the party actually happened. Once again, just a guess. If even. A musing.

The Mountain Goats – Riches and Wonders Lyrics 19 years ago
i agree with the eel. i don't feel any disomfort in the narrator. the secrets and exotic terms of endearment are all just things they do to show their love and even entertain each other, not some method of making things seem like something they aren't. haven't you ever had some silly game you played with your boyfriend/girlfriend?

the most powerful line in the song, in my opinion, is "and i want to go home / but i am home". However, this isn't about homesickness or a feeling that they have a house together but not a "home". i see this more as a statement that, while this couple have had some "hard times" together, perhaps leaving them without a physical "home" to speak of, he (the narrator) stil has an emotional home in his partner. Sort of a "home is where the heart is" kind of thing. maybe the line is presented in that manner to give a sense of realization, as if he sings the first half then, in the moment, realizes and says that he is home.

The Mountain Goats – Lion's Teeth Lyrics 19 years ago
Just because he says he "crawled in shotgun" doesn't mean he isn't making an implication through word choice. Are you telling me he literally grabbed his step-father's tooth? That seems a bit less likely than holding a gun to his head. There is something to be said of figurative speech and careful word choice in finding what he's trying to say here. I agree regarding the gun situation. I'm not sure about "I start wailing" though. I picture him finally putting down the gun and just trying to inflict any damage he can with his hands. Unless it takes the more vocal meaning, in which case he'd be crying loudly I suppose. Any opinions?
