i love this song so much and had a vague knowledge of perkins's sad history, so i did a little stalking. as probably already known, this song is clearly an homage to his mother and father's passing. clarification for those who aren't familiar though: "ash wednesday" must be, at least in part, a reference to the wednesday after 9/11, on which perkins' mother died. i'm sure perkins is evoking both the symbolic/religious connotations and the literal encompassing ashes of the day after. "fire" and "tear gas clouds," while symbolic, are also literaly references to this day, i'm thinking. "on this day nine suns away from that sad sad saturday" in a twist of the bizarre and the sad, perkins' mother passed away a day before the ninth anniversary of his father's death. his father, anthony perkins, passed away on saturday, sept. 12, 1992. so, logically, this song is written from the perspective of the day after his mother's passing, on the ninth anniversary of his father's passing.... "king and queen" and "bride and groom" and "yesterday and today" are all references to his mother and father, i suppose. certainly, there are deeper connotations to everything in this song with heavy symbolism, but this is certainly the context i think. crushing, isn't it. and to craft something so incredibly moving and potent and beautiful out of it all. |

| The National – Slow Show Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| This is the anthem for all awkward, maladjusted late 20s-early 30s folk who only mean so, so wel. One of the most perfect songs I've heard in a while. | |
| Radiohead – Nude Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I can't decide which version I like better, but I've warmed up to the new version a lot more than before -- at first, I hated the new arrangement. Thom's voice is just godly in this one. I love how hollow yet celestial the whole thing sounds. Gives our despondency and desperation such beauty. | |
| Radiohead – All I Need Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| I agree that this song is beautiful, but I was surprised by the nature of the climax. Sounded like something straight out of Coldplay or Keane. So melodic and almost conventionally so with the piano. But beautiful nonetheless. Agree that this is one of the best off the new album. | |

Actually, I think the first lines go: come light with me for your (something) of history i'll show you the god falls asleep on the job And damn, the studio version has trumpets and HORSES. |

| "black holes and revelations"... what a line. subtle muse is not. but i love them. | |

| I love this so much more than Supermassive Black Hole. The beginning is ridiculously awesome -- what a catchy melody...esp. amazing in the "what fools can be kings" part. But I feel like the song loses itself in the second part, where Bellamy is calling for resistance and that awesome melody from the first part vanishes. There, the song becomes familiar in the bad way, sounding like a lot of other unremarkable MUSE songs. And as for the meaning, the title's so amazing but the lyrics are like so bleh... some kinda call for resistance against some ineffecient authority...how old is that. Still, effing amazing song I guess -- I hopes it's indicative of what the rest of the album's gonan be like. | |
