Okay here's the whole point of the song:
This girl gets knocked up, she's afraid to tell her folkds. She becomes an outcast, kinda like the main character in the scarlett letter. She read things about how to terminate her pregnancy, but nothing really helps her so she decides to run away, taking a bus to whereever so that she can start anew. She's also got this whole self-conflict thing going on about whether or not she should even have the kid because she doesn't want to be tied down. So yeah I think that pretty much sums it up. Belle and Sebastian are great...so....1964. |

yeah haha i actually get the whole television thing. i think AK is also dealing with frausteration with the world here, not just depression. he's annoyed that everything seems so superficial, from the media to maybe his friends, etc. i don't know, just a thought! |

i think this song is definetely about drugs. AK is referring to how at a point in time drugs were his life and how the job of being a musician was put on a back burner and all he cared about was the glamerous lifestyle he had. |

i totally agree with what everyone has been saying...just one question: what is the reference he's making when he sings "the mother, the father, the daughter"? |

first of all let me just say i love the peppers...i mean there music is just on this level that is undescribable...but enough about that this isn't a fan club sight. i agree with danieljarvis to some extent. this whole song is about conformity and how society sets idealistic standards that they expect everyone to follow. i totally see the religous reference, but what i really see is AK's commentary on the whole concept of mainstream music. i think he feels that his band started out as a little hobby he and some friends had, but with their fame the band was forced to alter their incredibly unique style. For example, look at their album "by the way" which is probably the least funky.Don't get be wrong its a good album, but i find it blatantly obvious that it was heavily influenced by other people than the chili peppers. In other words,i think the song is about AK's fraustration with the hypocrisy of the music buisness. (Sorry if i upset anyone and you disagree with me). |
