Brooke Fraser – Arithmetic Lyrics 17 years ago
Well, I don't think who she's singing to is the important part. Many of her songs are very clear as to who the lyrics are intended to. But in this song, it's more about describing a type of love. In this case, it's unconditional love.

Love that is "so much more than arithmetic", is love that isn't defined by any amount of good things or bad things you've done. It doesn't matter how imperfect one is. The love is unconditional.

Boys Like Girls – Thunder (Demo) Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm going to take a stab at the meaning for myself.

(and I won't share my personal business in my interpretation LOL)
________________________

I believe that this communicates the feelings that come along with the end of a break-up or some type of separation, with all the regrets and nostalgia that come along with it. He's hurting, maybe spending days isolated in his home, or out driving with nowhere particular to go. And he knows that she's hurt by everything as well, but they're at a point where they think it best to stay away from each other. And maybe he feels resentment and bitterness towards her for whatever reason, but he realizes that despite all that, he remembers she meant a great deal to him - she was a "soundtrack for his summer", he says, and that she was definitely one of the great loves, if not THE great love of his life. And for that reason, instead of putting her out of his mind or doing what he can to hate her or forget about her, he feels she and the memories they shared are worth all the hurt and anguish he's feeling, so he decides to stand up and face the rain, and welcome the thunder.

The Ataris – The Ghost of Last December Lyrics 18 years ago
Personally I think it's about someone trying to fill the void in their life by one night stands, but it's doesn't heal his loneliness, which is the one thing he can't have.

I can't really make sense of the second verse though... "we can't see doubt, on the list of abandoned doubts, when the truth came out, i'll decline if nothing else"... what does that mean?

Too bad this didn't make the final release.

Unkle Bob – Swans Lyrics 18 years ago
...

The words of a broken man who wished he hadn't been the way he was when she was still around... Maybe he ignored her, or couldn't find it in him to open up and let her in to see the real him... So somewhere along the road she decided she'd had enough and moved on to someone else, even though her feelings for him was what made her stick around for as long as she did. By the time he was ready to change, she had already started another relationship... and although she loved him, she stays so far away from him, never wanting to see him again, because she fears falling for him again.

A couple who never had a fair chance...

...it's so sad. ...and so unfair.

The Ataris – When All Else Fails, It Fails Lyrics 19 years ago
I'm not sure if it's intended, but this song is almost virtually the same chord progression as Looking Back On Today. Perhaps a subtle intention there... who knows.

A few corrections are needed, I think...

"We've got to hold onto this moment; DON'T LET GO."
"Casts its VILE upon this empty room."
"Did I fail you? YEAH, YOU FAILED ME TOO."

The Ataris – Summer '79 Lyrics 19 years ago
I doubt that's how his parents met, since Kris Roe's from Indiana - he moved to California when he was in his late teens or early twenties. And personally, judging by the songs the Ataris usually write, I doubt this was a song they wanted to do, but a song their LABEL wanted them to do - a song that was more mainstream-ish and a bit more bubblegum than what they're used to. But still, it's a good song. Who doesn't like bubblegum from time to time?

The Ataris – I Won't Spend Another Night Alone Lyrics 19 years ago
Okay, I know I'm not the only one that hears this...
What is it that Kris mumbles after the 2nd line??!

"The lights below they spell out your name... (mumble mumble)".

The lyrics from the album cover don't say anything. Does anyone know what he says?

The Ataris – Begin Again From the Beginning Lyrics 19 years ago
Well actually a lot of the lyrics in this song that Kris Roe actually does sing, sound questionable. "I have traveled to each road" is clearly what he says, but I still don't think that makes much sense lol.

And a "bluebird", I believe, is actually a type of train car.

Can anyone explain to me what Kris Roe's connection is to Australia?
In this song, he mentions "Sydney Harbour Bridge", and he also has a tatoo on his arm of an Australian passport stamp.

Gotta love that part when they go back to the chorus after the bridge... and it's just drums and the sounds of a radar or something...
"Be careful what you wish for, these stars are fading"
Awesome.

The Ataris – In This Diary Lyrics 19 years ago
Too bad the video isn't all that great. But then again, The Ataris aren't much of a "TV/music video" band - their strength is in their live performances. Still... it had a lot of potential for a great video...

The Ataris – Looking Back On Today Lyrics 19 years ago
My all-time. Forever.
I read somewhere Kris Roe promised he'd never play this song live again... since Denice (come over to my house) filed for divorce... I guess he didn't have enough time to take her where she wanted to go. Still, I've heard recent recordings of fans being able to persuade him to play it at acoustic shows. The last acoustic show I went to, the audience would shout it out when he took requests, and you could tell by the look on his face his reluctance to play it.
How incredibly painful it must be for him to realize that the two things he must love more than anything in his life -- his wife and his music clashed with each other to the point where he lost her because of him always out doing what he loves to do.

The Ataris – Between You And Me Lyrics 19 years ago
"I listen to my heart, and it says still run back for more."
I fancy myself to be a quite sensible guy, so when I realize I've begun to develop feelings for a girl I know I can't have, I cut it off as early as possible. Then I spent two weeks with a girl who changed my life... even though I knew she wasn't single, I felt like our hearts were just drawn to each other... even though I was so stupid and lost the chance she gave me, I'll love her forever.
And this song brings me comfort everytime I don't think I can bear not being able to share how much she means to me.

The Ataris – Act V, Scene IV: And So It Ends Like It Begins Lyrics 19 years ago
Kris said someone once asked him how he wanted to die... and so he wrote this song.

"And if I had my way, we'd wake up on the day we met..."

...I know the feeling. Of wanting to back to the very beginning... if only, right.

The Ataris – Begin Again From the Beginning Lyrics 19 years ago
Are these lyrics right? Some of it doesn't make much sense...

Anyway, I heard Kris and John play this live at an acoustic show in San Diego... I was sitting on a cold concrete floor and squished by the people around me cuz the room was so small. But then as soon as I heard just the first lines of this song... I knew in my head it was all worth it.

It's so rich of emotion - like there's feelings of helplessness, defeat, uncertainty of where to go from here, all wrapped up in nostalgia but still somehow... I felt comforted, hearing this song...

It's songs like this that make Kris Roe one of the greatest song writers ever, in my humble opinion.
