I remember when i was in a pub and this song came one and some guy who had a bit to drink was cursing and swearing and protesting about 'niggers' (i quote) singing about peace. It dawned on me that people like him is what's wrong with the world today and what the black eyed peas were singing out against. |

I didnt really like this song at first..but it grew and grew on me and now i consider it one of the best rock songs ever written. It reminds me of my hometown...lets say it not a very nice place. And i loved the Sopranos episode (season 5 i think) where Tony asks Chris where he was after turning up late for a meeting. I reckon its something to do with drugs 'helping' to deal with depression ('Its just easier than dealing with the pain') but these drugs are making his life like a runaway train. The drugs are a 'ticket for a runaway train' 'call you up in the middle of the night...you were there like a blowtorch burning' I think the first 4 lines of verse 1 and first 2 lines of verse 2 represents hope for the person.The person asking for help to get out of the depression from a loved one (or a lost love perhaps which led to the person's depression in the first place)...try to be like what he was before. Unfortunately there's no way back. 'seems like i should be getting somewhere somehow i'm neither here nor there' Drugs aren't working, he thinks they should be but he's the same if not worse..'neither here nor there'. 'I can go where noone else can go I know what no one else knows' I think the above lines might refer to how a depressed people/people who have lost a loved one feels that they are the only ones...noone feels as they do, noone else knows what it's like to be in that position. 'Wrong way on a one-way track'...drugs are a one way track to misery, deeper depression..death perhaps...a place the person does not want to be which i think is represented in the line below: 'Im in too deep there's no way out, this time i have really led myself astray'. |
