Wir Sind Helden – Denkmal Lyrics 18 years ago
this is one of my favourite songs and i've listened to it many times. personally i think this song is more as just a love story. Wir sind helden songs are obviously love-songs but they also work a lot of social critic in them.

i think it's about their band being put on a "piédestal" by 'critics' how they fear not being able to live up to their reputation; overexposure will kill their music. they think that the praise and fame they got (out of their first album) was quite cheap (hence the statue in front of the aldi) and thus likely to be broken.

another sentence that struck me was "Siehst du die Inschrift da unten bei den Schuhen
Da steht in goldener Schrift wir sollen in Ewigkeit ruhen"
that sentence always remembers me of cologne. the edith stein "denkmal.

of course there is also the connexion to a love story namely the ending scene of "jeux d'enfants" (2003) that is clear in the sentence "Wenn uns jetzt hier wer erwischt sind wir für immer vereint in Beton und Seligkeit" but because the song was on their 2003 album i think it's just a case of coincidence.

and after all any song is just about what it means to YOU.

Beastie Boys – Shadrach Lyrics 18 years ago
those three names are indeed the key to understanding the song. Sadrach mesach and abedagno where three pious jews who, according to the bible, lived under the reign of nebukadnezar. They refused to bow before the golden statue he had made of himself.

in this song the beasty boys identify themselves with those 3 jews and king nebukadnezar stands for the music industry. The bosses of the major labels. the song expresses the desire to stay true to theirselves.

the songs is from the 1989 album Paul's Boutique. that album was disliked and vilified by their label (ironically capitol records) (no need to say the king stays in the capital) because it was not commercial enough. Guess they got the message trough.

hoochie coochie can stand for
a) female genitals
b) (illicit) Liquor
or c) (the least likely) a voodoo doctor

johnny the concheroo is the root of a relative of the common sweet potato and would be carried in a mojo bag to draw money, bring luck in games or enhance someones sexual powers. it is however also a powerfull laxative.

Tennessee Ernie Ford – Sixteen Tons Lyrics 19 years ago
This song is about the coal mining indeed. and about debt bondage. Miners had to spend a certain percent of their wages in the shops owned by the company they worked for. this created an even bigger dependency on the company. These systems of debt bondage (have) existed all over the world.

"another day older and deeper in debt was a phrase oft used by the original songwriter, Mister Merle Travis.

Buffalo Springfield – For What It's Worth Lyrics 19 years ago
In August '66 the local citizenry had tried to clear the area around the Sunset Strip club Pandora`s Box, whose long haired clientele detered legitimate tourism, by having the police enforce a curfew. Protests followed, things turning ugly when the police weighed in with the night-sticks. Witnessing this upon return from a trip to Nicaragua , Stills was inspired: "All the kids on one side of the street, all the cops on the other side - in Latin America that meant there'd be a new government in about a week. "Both a warning and a barricade-manning counter-culture rallying cry
