no one every got anything great without taking a risk. the song isnt just about a relationship, its about getting what you want out of life in general. fuck the concept of a fire door. if you really have everything you want then you dont need a fire door, because when the fire comes you would do what it takes not to get your house burnt instead of just leaving it through some escape. its ok to be prepared for the unexpected but when its the one thing that you really want, even though the unexpected might happen you cant treat it like any other thing. if its not important to you enough that you need that sense of being able to abandon it, then its probably not going to be the best thing that you could have (not to say 'be selfish' but dont think that you gotta settle for something that wont satisfy you). anywho this song makes me think of a lot of things and you get the basic idea. |

it's about not letting people who try to compromise you as a person affect you and it's also kind of an attempt to convince people who do that kind of stuff that it's stupid. |

i agree with part of your interpretation. i disagree with the fact that you call it depressing. although at first i thought it was about neil wanting a simple life and abandoning the glamorous one but then taking a bitter turn and staying in the "motion picture" world, i now don't think so. he mentions motion pictures as a home away from home which "brings smiles to eyes" (in the last verse he is regarding to a motion picture of himself). well the original motion picture brings smiles to people's eyes but has a hidden purpose which is glamour and greed. at the end, instead of running away from this world, neil instead decides to take it head on, fighting it with its own style. while on the outside he is making himself seem "pretty" to the motion picture world, he is actually destroying it as a hidden purpose. that is his motion picture |
