I believe that Miranda nailed it, though bobsmith84's "alternate view" seems to make sense. I also second classicrockman1's comment about the vocal harmonization in this song's arrangement for the Growing Up tour. I was so lucky to be at a rehearsal before a concert. They rehearsed the harmonized chorus part a-cappella a couple of times just before my eyes (Peter was also of the lot) and I was hooked. It definitely was one of the most incredible music moments in my life. Too bad they didn't perform the song that night. In hindsight, that would have been asking too much :) This probably doesn't add much to the song's meaning, but I felt like to share. |

It's a known fact that even the wikipedia entry for Mart reports: the song is about the divorce and the effect on their children. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Gore#Personal_life There's also an external link that points to an EPK in the official site, that presumably contains reference to this fact. |

I definitely remember reading an interview with Martin, though I can't remember where (may be one of the old official fan club BONG fanzines, they used to have Q&A sessions with the band members, but I can't be sure). Martin replied to a direct question about NLMDA saying that the song is about his relationship with Fletch. I don't know if mine was the first source of this information, but it pretty much seems the official position, and I've heard it quoted elsewhere. This said, I believe the song is about drugs. I concur that the words "we're flying high" may be "a little bit too much to the point", but it makes a lot of sense anyway. Should that be the case, Mart could never have declared that publicly, at least not at the time. Maybe we'll hear differently one day. Maybe the song is really about Fletch. It sure is a wonderful, touching song. |
