i always believed Mr Henry was gay (why he's a fallen priest) and the other guys are his various lovers. and every time he said "she was bored of her _____, she was bored of her_____" i hear born. i think it's about a girl who was abused & didn't have the best home life & this older gay man is trying to help her, but cant really. he gave her shoes on a night when there was nowhere to stand (what good is that) and gold when it fell from the sky (it would have no value then) and advice she couldn't understand. |

i always interpreted the line "She was the daughter of the second American Revolution" to have some correlation to the Civil War. To me the song is about the south having to re-work it's economic base after the end of slavery. But i'm kinda a history nerd |

| my mother used to sing this to me, but instead of "making love" she would sing "making lunch" that made the face washing thing more understandable...i always imagined pb&j | |

does anyone else think that the aaaAAAaaaa part in the background sounds like the way they sing Cecilia? I always have, to me it sounds like very faintly, they're saying "oh, Cecilia" |

| Man Man – Young Einstein on the Beach Lyrics | 17 years ago |
| It reminds me of like a little add or autistic kid running and yelling and being spastic | |
| Iron & Wine – Freedom Hangs Like Heaven Lyrics | 18 years ago |
| the line "papa's going to hide shaking gristle/And shaking like bone" reminds me of the greek myth where the people hide the fat & gristle and yuck stuff to fool the gods with the sacrifices. it would explain why mary was carieng her shame, her husband's trying to cheat god | |
| Iron & Wine – Jezebel Lyrics | 18 years ago |

i see this song (and evening on the ground to an extent) as if the story told in the bible isn't all true. "She was born to be the woman we could blame" she may have been blamed for all these horible things, but if history (or any story really) is told by the victorious, it doesn't always paint a clear picture. i think this song is about looking at it from another point of view. she is chased by the dogs who say "Wait /We swear we'll love you more/And wholly, Jezebel/It's we, we that you are for only" like destiny really, and the man singing just is wishing fate didn't rule so much, because he never got to tell her how much she ment to him. |

i'd like the song if he didn't pull out "christ" so long, it's like nails on a chalk board to me. I love NMH, just not the begining of this song. and i agree both that you can like/love jesus without worshiping/believing in him and that Jesus Chriast is used as an adjective/interjection |

I thought up a beautiful (in my oppinion) vidio for this song, It makes me cry, but in a happy way. I fell in love to this and Aeroplane Over The Sea. but I always thought of them reading an anatomy book during the "lay and lern what eachother's bodies were for" part...kind of odd, I know. I think he's reminding her of her life, because for some reason she cant remember, at the begining I think of him with a photo album and her in a weelchair and hospital gown looking very blank, drooling perhaps... the part "And this is the room One afternoon I knew I could love you And from above you how I sank into your soul", I think that pretty well describes falling in love. becoming one with someone. He realized he could, and he did. that's when i see them geting intamate, not at "learn what eachother's bodies were for" |

| Neutral Milk Hotel – Oh Comely Lyrics | 19 years ago |
| I think it's about a girl in a dead end life, with a cheating father, apathetic mother, probably an abusive boyfriend. It seems very scornfull to me. Like he knows she could and should have a better life. Then she runs away. and misses changes in her families lives. But that's just my opinion | |

I don't see the song as being about Anne Frank, she's there, but just because someone's there does not mean they are the focus of the song. Their songs remind me of like a comatose or brain damaged girlfriend/ ex girlfriend and the songs are trying to remind her of the life they lived together and how much he loves her. |

wow, noone has said anything yet, hmm, well, this is my boyfreind and my song...so, i'll have a go. It's about dead relationship whwere she isn't into him anymore, but no mater how she hurts him, he still loves her and wants to help her, even if they are no longer going out, just beeing two people who look after one another. |

I play exquisite corpse on long car trips and with my old girl scout troup...but we didn't call it that. And this son reminds me of a 40s film nuar (Sorry i can't spell) i'v tried writing one about it, but it just doesn't work... |

| They Might Be Giants – Don't Let's Start Lyrics | 19 years ago |

This song is about the begining of a relationship (or at least that's what I'v always gotten). I think the begining is the worst part, when you like someone, and you think they like you, but you just don't know if they are seriouse or not. He "could believe for all the world that [she's his] precious litle gril"but, he's afraid she'll hurt him. but in the end he agrees, he sais Don't, Don't Don't beging her to leve him alone, then Let's start. |
