i think it's to do with the overwhelming sadness of coming back to your hometown after having made your own life somewhere else, and then realising there's nothing left for you but memories.
the last few lines especially make it sound like the small country village that you grew up in has ballooned into a large city, all traces of what you remember gone. be it people or places. it's letting us know time is quite a destructive thing. |
