Pixies – Subbacultcha Lyrics 15 years ago
Just another quick note about the first two lines... I don't know if it's what the first commenter meant by "reflexive" or "symmetry," but I noticed that they use the same words, just scrambled up (at least in the At the BBC version). The cool thing about this is the way Frank Black ends the second line; "There is something about this song" has all the words of the first line, except it's missing "a." In the At the BBC version, Black trails off at the end of the second line ("uhhh") so it's a perfect mapping. What you hear is "This is a song about something there / There is something about this song a..."

Sorry for being a huge nerd and possibly ruining the song with analysis, but I thought it was awesome that Black would put so much thought into two little lines.

The Pipettes – Pull Shapes Lyrics 19 years ago
I mainly like this song because of the strings, but the rest is like.... so sugary it's aspartame. Powerful and toxic in large quantities. But the string arrangement reminds me of Belle & Sebastian's "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" album, which is definitely a plus in my book. :)

Cold War Kids – Hospital Beds Lyrics 19 years ago
So first off, I love this song and cannot get it out of my head.
I think it's about feeling trapped in life, maybe feeling like there's so much you want to do, but are powerless to do any of it. He wants people to "put out the fire" in him so he stops feeling this longing.

But I think it can go many ways; I agree with a lot of what people have said so far.

Sleeper – What Do I Do Now? Lyrics 19 years ago
Hmm... I haven't heard of Sleeper; I have this song off Elvis Costello's "All This Useless Beauty."
I love this song; it's so sweet and so sad. I've been in this situation, when two people care about one another but realize the relationship is failing.

They both want everything to work, and have tried to repair things before ("I thought we had it sorted / Out the other day"), they secretly blame themselves for whatever's going wrong ("What did I do wrong?"), but the worst part is, they don't *know* what that even is ("No one told me it was raining").

They still care about one another; "reaching for each other's hands," and that they're each terrified of the other person leaving. But they know they're doomed, and both of them can say "I'll miss you every day of your life."

Someone tries to make a decisive action ("Tore up all your photos") but regrets it because he/she still cares about the other person ("didn't feel too clever"). They each try to come up with concrete reasons for why things are failing ("Is there someone else? Or am I too familiar? / Was it when I said I wanted to have children?"), but the truth is, there isn't any real, preventable reason. These things just happen, sometimes...

That's what I take from this song. You can look at it either way, as either depressing or comforting. It's sad to think that two people can, despite best intentions and best attempts, fall apart like this. But... it's also kind of comforting to think about this if you've been in the same boat; to know that some things inevitably collapse helps you avoid those "What-ifs" and feelings of guilt that can drive you insane.

...Phew. That was long-winded. Aside from all that, why don't more people comment on this song? It's gorgeous!

Not much to say about the lyrics, this song is just beautiful. I can definitely see it being about depression.

The Fratellis – Whistle for the Choir Lyrics 19 years ago
Oh maaaan I love this song. It gets stuck in my head for days, it keeps me up at night, and I don't really mind. It reminds me of something McLean ("American Pie") could have written (okay, maybe not *exactly* that, but... it just has that old-timey, good sound to it.)

Favorite lines:
"Oh you're a stupid girl, oh me, oh my, you talk
I die, you smile, you laugh, I cry."

Ahhh.

The Beatles – Anna (Go to Him) Lyrics 19 years ago
Hehe, I'm another Anna. We need a club or something.

Good story about this song... This summer I was at a 6-week program in a different state, and after a while I really got to missing my friends. This awesome chick named Joan called me a few weeks in, played this song in a message for me, and said something like "Yes. This is weird. But I'm simply going crazy here without you." I remember sitting in the library when I checked my messages, and laughing out loud when I heard that one.

Locksley – Into the Sun Lyrics 19 years ago
I think this song is about liking (maybe even loving?) someone so much that you don't care if they're with someone else, or not talking to you. You're just happy to be around them.

Other than that, I just LOVE this song. Catchy beat, early-Beatles-style, it's just really carefree and upbeat.

Belle & Sebastian – Get Me Away from Here, I'm Dying Lyrics 19 years ago
I thought this song was about someone who's too idealistic for life. When he sings "Get me away from here," I think he means "here" to be the world we live in, which isn't always cut out for idealistic people.
He likes himself alright -- he says he has "winning smiles" and "catchy tunes" -- but at the same time, he realizes that those aren't the things that the world appreciates ("we don't stand a chance"). He relates to the boy in the story (who also has a "winning smile", just like him), but understands that the boy is too naive to succeed or get what he wants. The only context where "naivete succeeds" is in a fairy tale.

As for the end of the song... I don't think the singer commits suicide so much as he just comes to the conclusion he's not really made for this world. Suicide -- his "goodbye" -- would be the ultimate revenge, making the world "cry" for him, but the singer decides to make "no declaration" and just accepts that he doesn't necessarily fit in with the jaded, realistic world.

I know that analysis sounds really depressing, but I find this to be an upbeat happy song (the lyrics as well as the music). I certainly relate to the speaker, and I love the conclusion he comes to: we're here on this world, and in the grand scheme of things we may not fit in, but screw it, we're here anyway. The least and best we can do is love life while we're here.

That message has gotten me through many a sleepless night. :)

Belle & Sebastian – Act of the Apostle II Lyrics 19 years ago
I thought this song was about the kind of malaise and restlessness you get from having a load of problems pile up, like in Act of the Apostle I where the girl's mother is sick and she's losing focus. In this song, the singer's a "genius" and a "prodigy", but he doesn't seem to care about those things. He's lost his sense of sureness and security about life: like in the lines "The city was losing its appeal" and "Oh, if I could make sense of it all!" and he's trying to rediscover what made him tick by getting into outside things like an 'Independent' and the bible. But at the same time, the singer realizes that the only way to regain that security and sense of "I've-got-everything-figured-out" is to look inside himself. The "God" he's searching for is in his past; "back in her village, in the fields." Btw, I think that the singer in the first part of the song and the girl in the second part are the same person, in that they have the same feelings and problems.

... Wow, that's really long and rambling. But hell, I'm the first commenter. ...Sometimes I feel like I relate to this song so completely. :) Belle and Sebastian, simply put, are amazing.
