This song is about his relationship with god. At this point in the story his faith is unquestioning and just wants to be closer to god. The soccer balls on knees I think is an metaphor for planets that keep coming up over the horizon and god is the force that keeps kicking them up into the air |

i think the person elenor meets at the bar is chief inspector brancheflower. He told her He had a motor cycle to impress her and he really drove his wifes car. There are more reasons why i think this, but i'm lazy and don't want to write. |

| Modest Mouse – Jesus Christ Was an Only Child Lyrics

the psychology of being an only child tells a lot about this song. An only child doesn't have brothers or sisters to devide a parents time. That means that an only child will be the most important thing in the parents lives. However this makes the child seem self important and gives them a desire to be at the center of attention.
I guess creating a religion and claiming you are God counts as being despirate for attention. |

i thought this song was about how he killed her so that he could always remember her better. He loved her so much that he wanted to always remember her, so he killed her. |

i always thought it was about suicide after someone he loved died.
This line
"I step down into sand, Water carries us from here"
makes me think the water takes him away from the mortal world as he walks farther into the ocean. |

| Modest Mouse – Exit Does Not Exist Lyrics

I have a different interpretation of this song. To me the song is about how Isaac realizes that most of our lives we wont remember. Seeing a memory in the frame that he doesn't have makes him wonder what other events have actually happened in his life that he doesn't really remember. If there are parts in your life that you can't remember how can you trust the parts that you do remember. He can't even trust himself enough to believe that the girl in the picture is real. Finally he realizes that the only record of our live is entrusted into something as unstable and untrustworthy as memory. If you can't be sure that anything actually exists why bother living?
I really like this song and it is my favorite on this album of theirs. It has made me shudder a few times when I think about his message. |
