I always thought it was HER because I interpreted the song to be about a guy getting a girl pregnant, a girl he doesn't really love, but if he stays with her he might find some way to love her and to make it work. "doctor make it better instantly, you're the only one who can" a doctor is the only one who can abort the baby and "make it better". |

I'm not sure why, but as soon as I heard "a fire in the attic" I instantly thought of the book Jane Eyre and it's rather meloncholy yet romantic ending ie, "Jane immediately travels to Thornfield Hall, only to find it destroyed by a fire and abandoned. She learns that Mr. Rochester lost a hand, an eye, and sight in the other eye as a result of an unsucessful attempt to save Bertha from the flames in the attic, of which she was the cause." |

I agree that it's about domestic violence, the lyrics and the way it's sung just hint at something darker than just a feuding couple. The part that makes me think it is about domestic violence most is "Everybody thinks you're well Everybody thinks I'm ill Watching me fall apart Falling under your spell" Everybody thinks the abuser is perfectly fine and normal and an ordinary nice person, whilst the abused is always making excuses and reasons for not going out and bruises etc. The people on the outside don't put two and two together and realise that the violence is going on. They are "watching" the abused fall apart without even realising it. Also the abuser is watching the abused fall apart and fall under their spell, so they won't ever tell anyone or anything. It just describes the domestic violence situation so tactfully and well. It's an excellent song. Love the 12 memories album. |

could this be about someone thinking about they're son/nephew/cousin who they care for deeply?? i get the feeling it's about a little boy because there are quite a few things that seem like parent like things to say such as "do as i say and not as i do" and "all i want is what's best for you" just a thought. |
