This song is quite clever. Helped me through a bad breakup. Anyway, the initial part of the song is her singing she realizes the decision had to be made and the relationship had to end. Her friend is comforting her, saying it's alright. And yes, evidently it is about realizing that after enough sacrifices you have to let go for whatever reason, and emerge a winner, better than the relationship. Thanks Alicia. |

What really caught me about this song was these two lines: "I don't need a better thing, I'd settle for less." and "I don't need a better thing, just to sound confused." I thought, that usually happens when you fall in love. The person isn't what you hope/wish he'd be at all. He just becomes necessary for you to love however that person really is. This song, yeah, most probably about a breakup. But the structures of how a relationship is, is there. The way Pete Yorn sings it, it's as if he still loves her, but has to accept her decision. He would be happy with the relationship otherwise. He doesn't want anything 'better' (else) just the way it was. |

| When I hear 'she dreams in colour, she dreams in red' I was thinking about dogs. Dogs are colourblind, but they can see red and I think a few other colours, but differently. I thought the song had an ironic reference to something like that. Yes, she dreams in colour, but only red. She knows her unhappiness is real, but sees no other way of being happier, and red would reflect the colour of blood, i.e. violence. That's just my two cents though. She is reduced to only seeing one 'colour' or in this case, way of life. | |

| I understand the song to be about two people who are interested in each other, but let their ambitions get in the way. The singer is cool about it though, he seems to understand that is the nature of how things go, and he won't wait anymore, he's going to try his luck even with so much time passing and so much between them. But that's just my take, I don't know. | |

| Someone told me, and I don't know if this is true, that the way RHCP write songs is through a jam session, and as they conjure up their melodies, the lead singer does the same, conjuring lyrics. Is there a chance at all that the worlds are entirely random? | |

For me, the song opens with the narrator talking about her situation. She is still stuck in something, she is thinking about what she's done and what she's doing. She might have made some mistakes for more earthly reasons, propelled by fear and not the righteous.Perhaps she is in this new position of leadership and has allowed corruption to take the best of her. Her question if the person has been to a place like this is rhetorical. The person has, the person knows waht she is going through, and that is why she wishes that person was with her. They had shared their thoughts on it, they've spoken of it. 'to see your breath as it paints against the sky' refers to long private talks with their cars parked somewhere, their breaths fogging the glass that reveals the night sky. but the memory of their togetherness and what they've shared she feels is valuable..and will help her in the future, even alone. She just misses the guidance. |
