i think this song is about growing up in a small town and never actually leaving but watching your life change while everything around you stays pretty much the same. the first stanza is about the high school years... "Your brothers left here shaved and crazy" makes me think about college age kids finally getting out of the small town and coming back to visit all clean-cut and modernized while the whole town is stuck somewhere in the past. The second verse is about growing up and living your adult life in the same town where you grew up... The use of the sunset suggests a cycle.. once the sun has gone down it will only be a few hours till it comes right back up. The second stanza talks about watching the next generation grow up while while the present is slowly dying. The songwriter suggests that one should let go of the past and embrace the present. |

Colour the coast with your smile It's the most genuine thing That I've ever seen I was so lost but now I believe -- in the chorus here, he is explaining that this girl is different from the other girls and she laughs at his jokes and flirts with him and he is discovering how much he loves her... Follow me south of the big docks Where they tether the boats The rich men revere as so important They hire our fathers to steer -- this part is explaining that they are not locals to wherever they are (probably a harbor town) nor are they wealthy considering that the rich men hire their fathers to steer their boats. And down to the edge of the water Where we'll spill our guts And we'll name our fears I'll give you this picture Keep it and don't be scared -- in this part he talking about meeting her down at the water and having one of those never ending, tell-all conversations where you say the things you thought you would ever say to anyone. When he tells her "dont be scared" he is telling her not to be scared to fall for him Colour the coast with your smile It's the most genuine thing That I've ever seen I was so lost but now I believe thiss song is so beauiful |

i have been listening to this song for years and it is by far one of my favs. i have always thought it was a guy getting out of prison, but still feeling bad about what he did to get into prison. here I stand: sad and free I can't cry I can't see what I've done no, God, what have I done? just my thought!! |
