I notice Adam doesn't use names of people very much, but names of places. I wonder if this song is about a time when he lived in or visited Vienna and really liked it there. But now that he's home he can only visit it in his memories, and he wonders if it is still the singing and dancing place he loved. |

I think the whole first part of the song is from the perspective of God, who embodies and encompasses all the comforting things that make life pleasant. I think the last four lines are him talking back to God in a poetic prayer. Adam does mention that he is very religious... |

No, on hearing it again, I think the song is about a soldier who was just trying to get along, and now he's been captured by the enemy and sentenced to death(last verse is describing his trial). As he sits in jail, forgotten, he is writing is final memoirs. |

I'm trying desperately to figure out who the main character is, the best I can come up with is someone who has orchestrated a war (a president maybe) to try and make the world better, but in doing so has only caused pain and suffering. So he's in a confessional telling how no matter what he does it ends up being the wrong thing in God's eyes (The man). Or maybe the man is the collective influence of everyone he's worked with who made him do evil... not sure. |

Johnny is an excellent songwriter, and he goes throught the "walk of life" then looks back on what he's done and doesn't worry about it, he just writes a song about it. |

This is another example of Mark Knophler's amazing story telling skill. He's basically telling how he went to a carnival and met this girl and they decided to stay anonomous to eachother, and he describes their magical night, except he uses way cooler diction then any mortal man. At the end he tells how he watched her walk away into the night, and now he's come back to see if he can find her again.
Also I think he's comparing the excitement of meeting someone new to that of being on a roller coaster or various other rides. |

I think both schools of thought can be correct. It seems to talk both about listening to loud music to release your anger, and about dildos, which both require transistors (or electricity anyway). so perhaps it is telling how technology today can evoke amazing emotions its users. |
