all i know is, when wayne fuckin' coyne says the song isn't about sex or masturbation, then it is time to stop making that claim. i don't know what this song means, mostly because i'm not sure it is supposed to mean anything. can't the song just be what it is? about a girl who puts vaseline on toast, a guy who blows his nose with magazines, and another girl who dyes her hair with tangerines? is that not interesting enough for you? |

not to nitpick lyrics but it's "safe place to bleed" rather than "safe place to breathe" and that changes the meaning a little bit so it's worth mentioning |

what i have always heard it as, and what i have read on other websites is "i am my mother's hand". this makes slightly more sense to me for two reasons. first, it makes more sense with regards to the following line about leaving the body in the bed all day. second, hen's are female, and thus mr. boeckner singing about being a hen doesn't seem reasonable. either way the meaning isn't explicit so who knows. wonderful song though. perhaps my favorite on the album. |

just for the record, "scotty" refers to The Gerbils member and NMH collaborator Scott Spillane who plays various brass instruments, most notably the trumpet. I've actually seen a video of that performance, and i assume it was one of his later as it was for New Year's 1999 and that was about the end up Jeff's live perfomances. I love this song, it's simple yet brilliant. |
