Don't let anyone tell you that what you feel about this song isn't "right" or isn't the "real" meaning. See, the thing about any of Jackson Browne's songs is that they can mean anything to anyone and no one is ever wrong. That goes for any song by any artist. I don't see this song meaning anything other than the fact that we all grow up and lose our innocence. When we're young, we think we can change the world and as we get older we begin to realize how little we can really do. |

This song is loosely based on meeting his first wife. When asked to do it in concert a few years ago (around 1993-94) he said he no longer performs this because it's not a true reflection on how it really happened. |

Correct. He was 16 and at that age it doesn't seem like he could have lived enough years for all that emotion. Just goes to show you how incredibly smart and in tune this man truly is. There's a version of this song by Ian Matthews, which I think is on his album, "Some Days You Eat The Bear". Both are beautiful. |

I think this song is just a comment on middle class America and the rut we all get in working day after day trying to make ends meet and the need to make ourselves feel better with the aquisition of more and more possessions. |

I think this song is hugely under-rated. There's so much regret and sorrow in these words. The upbeat music, i think, throws off the listener to not pay as close attention to the message as they should. One of the truly great ones. |

Just wanted to set the record straight on this song, and for that matter, the Late For The Sky album. This album was released in 1974. Jackson's wife committed suicide in 1976. Some of the songs on the Pretender album are supposedly about the death of his wife, but he's said in interviews that most of the songs were already written before she died. |
